First-Timer’s Guide to Nassau Paradise Island

PHOTO: The Royal Towers on Nassau Paradise Island, Bahamas. (photo via Flickr/Tambako The Jaguar)

It’s famous the world over: The small, slightly-larger-than-one-square-mile resort island sitting right off the coast of Nassau, Bahamas. Paradise Island is so recognized, it draws in most of the more than 2 million visitors that Nassau welcomes every day.

And it’s worth the quick taxi ride from the city, even if only for a day trip or a couple days’ stay. Paradise Island is home to a number of world-class resorts as well as beautiful beaches and family-friendly attractions visibly designed to entertain the kids.

Here’s a quick guide to Paradise Island to get you started:

 Getting Around

İlgili resim

Paradise Island is a quick ferryboat, jitney or cab ride away from Nassau. The ferries or water taxis departing Potter’s Cay Dock to Paradise Island run every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and will only set you back $8 per person for a round-trip ticket. The jitneys or public buses run from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily and are even cheaper with fares starting at $1.25.

If you prefer a more private mode of transportation, taxis are everywhere in Nassau and on Paradise Island. A one-way trip from Nassau to Paradise Island will cost you about $15.

Currency

Nassau Paradise island currency ile ilgili görsel sonucu

One advantage of Nassau and Paradise Island being a tourist haven is that U.S. currency is accepted everywhere—from the resorts to the street vendors—so visitors won’t need to deal with currency exchange. The exchange rate is one to one.

Bring enough cash for cab rides, tours, experiences, dining and shopping as most places are cash only.

Places to Stay

Bay View Suites Paradise Island ile ilgili görsel sonucu

Hotels and resorts abound both on Paradise Island and in Nassau, so you have a variety based on your budget and preference. There are inexpensive hotels, the cheapest of which start at around $70 a night, as well as high-end ones that might cost you more than $1,000 a night.

There are also a la carte and all-inclusive properties as well as adults-only and family-friendly.

If you prefer to stay on Paradise Island instead of Nassau, a good affordable option is Bay View Suites Paradise Island. Located in the heart of the island, this budget-friendly hotel boasts guest rooms with a full kitchen, three swimming pools and free Wi-Fi.

Formerly the One&Only Ocean Club, Four Seasons’ The Ocean Club is a gorgeous, upscale property with classy rooms, suites and villas as well as excellent facilities and five miles of quiet, white-sand beach.

Things to Do

Arawak Beach paradise island ile ilgili görsel sonucu

Pack a few beach essentials (beach towels, beach umbrella, sunscreen), some drinks and snacks, then head to one of the lovely beaches on the island.

Arawak Beach has shallow waters and powdery sand for folks who prefer a less crowded spot. Paradise Beach is crowded but easy to get to and boasts exciting waves, while Cabbage Beach is one of the best in the Bahamas. Vendors are on hand for drinks, treats and beach equipment, if you’re short on supplies.

Even if you’re not staying at Atlantis, you might still be able to use the resort’s impressive Aquaventure Water Park, marine habitat or beaches. If you’re at one of the resort’s partner properties instead (or are on a cruise with one of the top cruise lines), you can purchase one of the resort’s day passes.

The most popular of these is the Aquaventure Water Park Day Pass, which—at $89 for kids ages 4-12 and $129 for adults—will give you access to the property’s 141-acre waterpark. Other passes include dolphin interactions, snorkeling at the Ruins and paddle boarding at Dolphin Cay.

Or you can try your hand at kiteboarding, parasailing and jet skiing if you’re the adventurous type. Many watersports operators offer such experiences right on the beach at most of the island’s most popular beach.

Top Music Travel Destinations Around the World

İlgili resim
PHOTO: London is one of the top city’s to visit if you’re a music lover, says Kayak. (photo via Flickr/Raphael Chekroun)

Awards season is upon us, and next up is the Grammys, one of the music industry’s biggest extravaganzas.

On January 26, the show turns 60. To mark that occasion, Kayak has just released its list of destinations music lovers need to put on their radar: Places that are not only home to multiple Album of the Year winners, but also various landmarks tied to the music industry.

 Greater London, England

Abbey Road bob dylan ile ilgili görsel sonucu

So many legendary music industry figures have called London home, it’s hard to know where to begin—The Beatles, Mick Jagger, George Michael, Rod Stewart; the list is endless. There’s also a great deal for music buffs to see and do, including Abbey Road, Royal Albert Hall and The Spice of Life Pub, which has hosted performances from such notable figures as Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens.

“Some of the most iconic stages and places in music history can be found in one city: London,” states the report.

Northern England

cavern club liverpool ile ilgili görsel sonucu

London is not the only British location that can claim ties to music icons. Both Manchester and Liverpool also have a number of Grammy-winning sons and daughters.

Liverpool is famously tied to The Beatles, who played many of their gigs at the city’s Cavern Club. For more than 70 years the club has hosted everything from underground acts to headliners.

Manchester, meanwhile, has musical roots that impressively date back to Elizabethan times. Among the modern names to have come from this city are The Smiths, New Order and The Hollies. Today, the city continues to have a vibrant music scene, from the buskers playing for tips in St. Ann’s Square to the live performances at Band on the Wall.

Los Angeles County, California

the world stage los angeles ile ilgili görsel sonucu

There’s no shortage of award-winning musicians and bands who have called Los Angeles home. Famous names that got their start here include The Doors, Guns N’ Roses, the Eagles, Beck, Maroon Five, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and more.

Today, the city’s music scene offers everything from hair metal to hip-hop. If you want to hear some of the city’s current up and coming talent, make sure catch a show from Zebulon in Frogtown, a group that’s new to the scene but already earning notice. The World Stage is another notable music stop in Los Angeles. Founded in 1989 by the late jazz drummer Billy Higgins and poet Kamau Daáood, World Stage has long been home base for great local talent and a place to hear unforgettable jazz performances.

Dublin, Ireland

İlgili resim

One word: Bono. Enough said right?

Wrong. The legendary U2 frontman is not the only famous rocker from Dublin. Sinead O’Connor, Joe Elliott (lead singer of Def Leppard) and Bob Geldof, (the organizer of Live Aid), are all from this famous Irish city. Among the top music-related sights to visit these days is Whelan’s, where you can take in a live performance featuring up-and-coming talent.

Another stop suggested by Kayak is The Grand Social, one of the city’s most well-known live music venues.

Montreal & Ottawa, Canada

İlgili resim

Delivering several well-known singers, particularly during the 1980s and 1990s (Celine Dion, Corey Hart and Alanis Morissette to name a few), the music culture in both Montreal and Ottawa remains vibrant.

The former is the location of frequent summer concerts and outdoor venues. But even in the dead of winter, you can find top acts at Club Soda and MTelus, which are located in the Quartier des Spectacles. When in Ottawa, check out the unassuming, no-nonsense Mavericks Bar to see smaller sets and local acts.

At Café Dekcuf, you get rowdier shows where bands mix enthusiastically with the crowds. The two cities are also conveniently located within a 2.5-hour drive of one another.

Unique Places to Discover in Japan

PHOTO: Japan is witnessing a travel boom, with double digit growth in visitors between 2016 and 2017. (photo via Pixabay)

With political instability and anti-tourist sentiment impacting many popular destinations, Japan’s reputation as a peaceful country has suddenly become even more attractive to travelers.

According to a recent report from Bloomberg, the country is experiencing a travel boom, with double-digit growth in visitors between 2016 and 2017. That means there’s no better time to seek out some of Japan’s lesser-known cities, towns and attractions in order to escape the growing crowds of tourists.

Exploration of Japan’s more far-flung, remote or unexplored regions is coincidentally being facilitated right now by a handful of new travel industry and infrastructure developments. Two new luxury sleeper trains have recently been brought online in Japan. The Twilight Express Mizukaze provides a circular tour of the Sanyo and Sanin western regions. Meanwhile, the Train Suite Shiki-Shima provides access to previously extreme corners of Japan’s countryside.

For those who do not speak Japanese, the recently created Ryokan Collection of high-end inns are specifically designed to expand access to areas outside of Japan’s big cities.

Kurashiki

İlgili resim

Take a step back in time visiting Kurashiki. Bloomberg likens Kurashiki’s historic city center to a time warp that transports visitors to the Edo era. Houses in the community, which is car-free, remain much the same as they were back in the 1600s. However, instead of being used as rice stores or granaries, they are cafes, pottery workshops, and Japanese denim boutiques. Also worth noting, Kurashiki is said to be responsible for creating sake.

Ise Shima

Ise Shima japan ile ilgili görsel sonucu

Four hours southeast of Kyoto, Ise Shima is known for its amas or women who dive for sea urchin, abalone and oysters. All of which means this a great place to visit if you’re an oyster lover.

The daily catch is available for sale at oyster stands along Ago Bay. Your best bet is to visit them with a guide who can negotiate a drool-worthy all-you-can-eat deal on the oysters. While in Ise Shima, be sure to visit the Ise Grand Shrine, one of Japan’s biggest and most important monuments.

Yakushima

İlgili resim

A tiny island in Japan’s remote southern region, Yakushima is home to towering cedar forests that are protected by UNESCO. The forests and trees are covered with stunning carpets of moss, providing a truly memorable hiking experience. Visitors will find suspension bridges, river views and more. There’s even a sacred cedar that’s said to be about 7,200 years old.

On the coast of Yakushima, there are mangrove-dense beaches inhabited by loggerhead turtles.

Shikoku

İlgili resim

Architecture and history buffs will enjoy Shikoku, which is home to an 88-temple pilgrimage route. The tiny island also boasts a bridge built by Samurai 800 years ago entirely out of thick vines.

Yet another site to take in are the remote village houses of the Iya Valley. The homes, some of which can be rented out as vacation retreats, are being restored by Japanophile author Alex Kerr as part of the Chiiori Trust initiative.

Serial stowaway arrested at Chicago O’Hare Airport

chicago o'hare airport ile ilgili görsel sonucu

A woman notorious for sneaking onto commercial airplanes has once again been arrested – this time after making her way through a federal checkpoint at O’Hare International Airport and onto a plane that flew her to London, authorities said.

Marilyn Hartman, 66, is believed to have gotten through airport security without a boarding pass or passport, flown to London’s Heathrow Airport and was detained by British Customs officials when she landed Monday Jan. 22, according to a news release from Chicago police. Hartman was sent back to Chicago and landed at O’Hare on Thursday. She now faces a felony theft charge and a misdemeanor criminal trespass charge, according to police.

Hartman, of Hamelitz Court in Grayslake, was expected to appear in court Saturday.

The Transportation Security Administration is investigating how Hartman was able to get through security, a spokesman said in a statement Friday.

“This matter is subject to an ongoing investigation and TSA is working closely with our law enforcement and airline partners in that effort,” according to the statement. “During the initial investigation it was determined that the passenger was screened at the security checkpoint before boarding a flight. Upon learning of the incident TSA, and its aviation partners took immediate action to review security practices throughout the airport.”

This is Hartman’s first arrest in Chicago since 2016, but she has a long history of trying to sneak onto airplanes.

Hartman was given probation when she originally was sentenced after pleading guilty in a February 2016 trespassing charge, she was sentenced to 364 days in jail a few weeks later, according to court records. She was credited for 23 days already served and could have spent less than six months in jail if given credit for good behavior, according to court records.

At the time she was sentenced to jail, Hartman had been living at a mental health facility on the Near North Side before violating the terms of her probation by leaving the facility and going to O’Hare.

Hartman has been detained several times across the country for trying to bypass airport security. In a court filing after her arrest in July 2015 at O’Hare on trespass charges, Cook County prosecutors described Hartman as a “serial stowaway.” She told NBC-Ch. 5 in December 2015 that she “may have” boarded planes without a ticket eight times. www.chicagotribune.com

Austin’s best tacos

You’re not eating right if you’re not eating tacos while in Austin. From taquerias to taco trucks, there’s no shortage of spots to indulge in one of Austin’s favorite foods. And you can dine on them all day, from breakfast to late night. Here’s a roundup of some of our town’s top tacos.

Freakin Vegan Wheat Taco. Courtesy of Tacodeli.

BREAKFAST

Tacodeli locations can be found all over Austin, but the original began as a little taqueria tucked away near the Barton Springs Greenbelt. Start your day with The Otto, a house favorite that wraps organic refried black beans, double bacon, avocado and jack cheese in a corn tortilla laced with Tacodeli’s award-winning salsa.

At Maria’s Taco Xpress, come for the breakfast specials (like the fajita beef taco) and stay for the free live music. Maria’s is known for its fun events held in the spirit of keeping Austin weird, from the Sunday afternoon Hippie Church with its rousing gospel music, to games of Big Boobie Bingo, held the first Tuesday of the month.

Stop by the El Primo food truck on South First Street and get your fill of a good, basic egg, cheese and meat breakfast taco. Meat choices include bacon, migas ham, sausage and spicy chorizo. Add in extras like beans and avocado and make it a morning feast.

Open since 1962, Joe’s Bakery & Coffee Shop serves breakfast all day in the time-honored tradition of an old-school diner. Load up on the Miga Taco Con Todo, stuffed with eggs, corn chips, tomatoes, onions, cheese and jalapeños.

The family-run Marcelino’s draws a faithful breakfast taco crowd with its wide-ranging menu choices. A popular option is the papa ranchera folded with Marcelino’s spicy potatoes, eggs, cheese and crumbled bacon.

LUNCH

Torchy’s Tacos was a pioneer in Austin’s food truck craze. Today, you can find brick-and-mortar locations all over the state. Creative taco creations include the battered and fried portobello mushroom strips nestled in a flour tortilla with refried black beans, roasted corn, cotija cheese, fresh avocado and ancho aioli. Or ask for a custom taco from the secret menu.

Step right up to Tyson’s Tacos stand and pick from a tempting array of tacos dreamed up by the husband-and-wife team of Tyson and Cherry Blankemeyer. For lunch, the Prince taco is a rich combination of pecan-crusted tilapia with raspberry pico de gallo and a kiss of goat cheese.

Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ combines the foods that Austinites love most: tacos and barbecue. Seek out this roadside trailer and belly up to the counter, where you can choose from tempting taco fillings like smoked brisket topped with guacamole, tomato serrano salsa and sea salt, all rolled up in a freshly made flour tortilla.

Veracruz All Natural was founded as a taco truck by sisters Reyna and Maritza, who honed their cooking skills working in their mother’s restaurant in Veracruz, Mexico. Fresh, organic ingredients are key to their tacos, which include the al pastor: pork (marinated in pineapple juice and chile guajillo), avocado, queso fresco, onions and cilantro nestled in a homemade corn tortilla.

DINNER

El Chilito has gained a following for its flavorful vegetable tacos. The vegan Vegetal wraps seasoned zucchini, yellow squash, corn, peppers, tomatoes, onions and serrano peppers in your choice of a flour, corn or whole wheat tortilla. El Chilito tacos are best enjoyed on the colorful outdoor patio with an espresso from the coffee bar.

At El Alma, Chef Alma Alcocer draws from her classic culinary training and Mexico City roots to create unique tacos like the Pato: roasted duck, almonds and pepitas. Pair it with a frozen margarita and dine on the rooftop deck with a sweeping skyline view.

The James Beard-nominated La Condesa offers modern dishes like the griddled Gulf snapper taco with green cabbage, chipotle mayo and pico de gallo. Add sides like the elotes (Mexican-style street corn) or a tasting of La Condesa’s complete guacamole and salsa selections.

Fresa’s Chicken Al Carbon prides itself on its house-made ingredients, from the flour tortillas to fresh salsas. Local pasture-raised chickens are key to dishes like the La Fresa taco, filled with achiote chicken, avocado, cotija cheese, white onions, cabbage and Fresa’s green salsa. Save room for the homemade tres leches ice cream.

Güero’s Taco Bar is known for its hand-shaken margaritas, salsa bar, and handmade corn tortillas and mole. Try a specialty taco like the El Jefe: beef al carbon topped with grilled corn, mushrooms, bell peppers, queso fresco and jalapeño salsa. Listen to live music in the Oak Garden Wednesday through Sunday nights.

LATE NIGHT

Open 24 hours, La Mexicana Bakery is proudly run by the Becerra family. Build your own taco with ingredients that include cactus, chorizo, potatoes and eggs wrapped in daily made flour tortillas. Candy lovers will want to sample the pecan pralines flavored with vanilla and cinnamon.

A late-night favorite since 1980, Kerbey Lane Cafe has locations around Austin that are open 24/7. Order the Tex-Mex blackened fish tacos, comprised of the grilled catch of the day layered with lettuce, avocado, pineapple-mango pico and cilantro-lime vinaigrette in a corn tortilla. Be sure to try Kerbey’s award-winning queso.

Licha’s Cantina is known for its Mexico City-style street food and mezcal craft cocktails. Tacos are served on a skillet, and include the Lengua (beef tongue with guajillo peanut salsa) and Alambre (skirt steak with bacon and queso asadero).

Located close to East Austin’s happening nightlife scene, Takoba is the perfect spot for a tipsy late-night snack. Ingredients that include chiles, beans and herbs are imported directly from Mexico. Taco plates like the De Bistec (fajita-style beef, grilled onions and cilantro) come with two side options that include charro beans or Mexican rice, along with a choice of flour or corn tortillas.

To satisfy late-night taco cravings, head to the Pueblo Viejo brick-and-mortar location on Brushy Street or its food truck at Craftsman Bar. Try a specialty like the Guaca Taco, stuffed with guacamole, fresh spinach and a choice of chicken or steak.

Now that we’ve got you started with some of Austin’s top tacos, go ahead and find your own favorites by exploring the city with the help of our extensive list of tasty taco and Tex-Mex spots.

Disney is better in the winter

Why Disney Is So Much Better in the Winter

Photo courtesy of Walt Disney World Resort

It’s 90 degrees, you’re drenched in sweat and you’ve been waiting in line for over an hour to see a princess. The rising summer temperatures and skyrocketing humidity that rolls into Orlando come summer can sometimes make for a less than magical day at the theme parks. From shorter lines to special events, there’s an upside to visiting Walt Disney World Resort in the middle of winter.

Seasonal Festivals and Events

Debuting at Epcot this winter, the International Festival of the Arts brings cuisine, art and entertainment to life. Taking place each weekend through February 20, this inaugural festival features different artisans and events ranging from artfully prepared food to Disney on Broadway Concert Series. Come March, the International Flower & Garden Festival boasts farm-to-table fare and bountiful blooms. Both festivals, along with average temperatures in the 70s, makes Disney even more appealing during the winter months.

Discounted Admission

The new 4 Park Magic Ticket allows for memorable magic in each park for only $70 per day plus tax. This ticket package provides admission to each of the four theme parks on four separate days through May 26, 2017 when booking by March 5, 2017. There’s a few blackout dates, but this is a package you won’t find come summer.

More Dining

Fewer crowds means more availability to grab that last-minute dining reservation. During peak times it’s almost always necessary to pre-plan reservations months in advance. Yet there’s a freedom in the winter to dine based on one’s cravings and schedule of the day. Venture outside the parks and visit Disney Springs for fried chicken from Chef Art Smith at Homecoming and feed your sweet tooth at The Ganachery with gourmet chocolates.

Smaller Crowds and Pristine Weather

When school’s out, families flock to Disney by plane, train and RV. Enjoy shorter lines for classic attractions and character meet and greets while basking in the impeccable Sunshine State climate. Plus, a last minute FastPass is easier to nab through the My Disney Experience mobile app so you can be on your way to enjoying Soarin’ with less wait time.

Holiday Cheer

While Disney brings magic to each day, the parks come alive with a special sense of wonder and excitement around the holidays. With more than 1,300 decorated trees throughout the resort and 8.5 million lights hanging, every inch of Disney World glows with holiday excitement in November and December. Disney’s décor will leave both children and adults in pure awe.

Do Savannah in a Day

Photo: A trolley passes through Forsyth Park in Savannah, Georgia. (photo via Flickr/Adam Detrick)

From the moment I entered Savannah, I knew it was a place I wanted to stay for a while. One look at the live oaks dripping with Spanish moss and the beautiful architecture, and I was ready to grab a mint julep, kick my feet up and enjoy some relaxed Southern living.

With three young kids in tow, that wasn’t exactly an option, especially because I had limited myself to a day trip.

Lucky for me Savannah is brimming with energy and charm, and we found plenty of ways to entertain the whole family. If you’re planning to swing by Savannah for a day during a road trip or family vacation, here are the highlights to check out:

Trolley Tours

The hop-on-hop-off trolley tour is a great way to see the city while simultaneously learning about Savannah’s history and culture. The trolley driver acts as a tour guide, dispensing fun facts, jokes and points of interest.

Another major draw was that we could hit all the major attractions we wanted to see.

I loved the freedom to get off the trolley and wander around whenever we felt like it: We simply had to find the next stop on our maps when we were ready to see the next site. The trolley ride was also honestly the highlight of the trip for my kids. They couldn’t stop talking about it for weeks afterward.

If it’s entertaining to both my two-year-old and me then it’s a win in my book.

Pick your Highlights Ahead of Time

The main thing I wanted to do in Savannah was amble the Spanish moss-lined streets and gaze at the charming houses. The main thing my kids wanted to do was eat ice cream. (We planned our trolley stops accordingly.)

After some research, I found there are neighborhoods full of beautiful houses surrounding Forsyth Park. You’ll see the iconic fountain on the north end of said park, with a sprawling playground nearby for kids of all ages.

It made sense to make this one of our hop-offs.

After letting the kids stretch their legs in the park, we loaded them up in the stroller and walked the historic neighborhoods. Every oak tree-lined street was perfectly picturesque.

To appease my children, we chose another stop near the famous Leopold’s Ice Cream for a sweet treat. Expect it to be busy, as it is a tourist destination, but the old-fashioned charm and decadent ice cream make it worth the wait.

Check Out the Squares

One of Savannah’s defining features is how it is designed around lush city squares. Originally intended as public gathering spaces, the squares now contain monuments, gardens and benches. They are perfect for relaxing and getting a feel for the city in between touring historic churches, museums and outdoor markets.

Choose a Restaurant

Savannah has plenty to offer in the way of good Southern cooking.

We wanted something that was specific to Savannah, kid-friendly and moderately priced, so we decided on The Pirates’ House. They have a great southern-style buffet, and the entire staff went out of the way to entertain our kids. They even offer tours, as it once served as an inn for seafarers and pirates.

You could also find plenty of restaurant options on River Street or by wandering City Market until you find cuisine that suits your tastes.

Take a Stroll

In a city so full of history and Instagram-worthy views, it’s practically mandatory to slow down and explore on foot. Savannah is relatively small and easy to navigate, so take to the cobblestone sidewalks and meander.

You never know what hidden gems you’ll find.

Two Reasons to Visit Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta’s boutique hotels are an appealing alternative to its larger resorts. They continue to evolve, setting their sights on several different client segments.

Mexico’s Premier LGBT-Friendly Destination

One example is Casa Cupula, which opened as Mexico’s first high-end LGBTQ property in 2002. Originally a five-bedroom guesthouse, it is now an 18-room property with a gym, spa, restaurant and pool club. Along the way, Casa Cupula has helped boost Puerto Vallarta’s reputation as one of Mexico’s premier gay-friendly destinations.

As part of ongoing “quinceanera” (15th birthday) celebrations, Casa Cupola has unveiled the Frida Suite.

The 860-square-foot suite celebrates the life of the artist Frida Kahlo, an icon of the LGBT community. It has a living area, kitchen, washer/ dryer and terrace with a hot tub and views of the city and bay.

Additionally, the Frida Suite is fully accessible, with ground-level access, wheelchair ramps and other accommodations.

But, it’s the suite’s design that truly evokes the spirit of Kahlo and her lasting influence. An original work of art by local artist David Estrada adorns the suite, as do fixtures and other retro pieces from her era.

“Décor was enhanced with Mexican indigenous items like sculptures, dolls and upholstery,” Don Pickens, owner of Casa Cupula. “The large windows help join the suite with the tropical foliage outside.  Frida loved nature. The result is unique, warm and beautiful.”

Pickens first came to Puerto Vallarta in 1997, after working for Microsoft in Seattle.

“I fell in love with the beauty, the people, the culture and the cuisine of Puerto Vallarta immediately,” Pickens says.

His intention in opening Casa Cupola was to “create a property with that level of quality and a warm, embracing environment where you’d be proud to bring your mom,” according to Pickens. “And my mom did visit many times,” he adds.

He believes the strongest selling point for Puerto Vallarta is its diversity.

“It’s all available, whether you want to lie on the beach every day or tour art galleries. Party all night or listen to live jazz music. Eat gourmet or street food, hike in the mountains or go boating on the Bay to snorkel or see the whales. Take in a show at one of our theaters and cabarets or enjoy Mariachis. If you want glamour, expensive boutique shops and snobbish, conspicuous consumption, go somewhere else. Puerto Vallarta is one of the friendliest, most beautiful tropical destinations in the world,” he said.

He also notes that the city’s current mayor, who is straight, marched in the local Gay Pride parade.

“The acceptance of the LGBT community here is icing on the cake and demonstrates the warmth of the pata saladas (locals),” says Pickens.

Puerto Vallarta’s Hollywood History

Casa Kimberly’s Elizabeth Taylor Suite

There’s also a Hollywood angle to the city’s allure.

“Puerto Vallarta came to fame in the 1960s when John Houston was filming ‘Night of the Iguana’ with Richard Burton. Then came along Burton’s lover, Elizabeth Taylor and all the world’s paparazzi followed,” Janice Chatterton tells Travel Agent.

Chatterton is the owner and designer of two boutique properties, Hacienda San Angel and Casa Kimberly. They sit atop a cobblestone-paved hillside overlooking Banderas Bay, the Sierra Madre mountains and an expanse of Terracotta rooftops.

Casa Kimberly was a gift to Taylor from Burton and Hacienda San Angel was a gift from him to his then wife, Susan Hunt.

Hacienda San Angel was originally a single villa known as Casa Bur-Sus. Today, it consists of four villas with 20 suites, each uniquely decorated. The property showcases Mexican colonial architecture and antique furnishings, and includes three pools, two restaurants, a wedding chapel and lush gardens.

“Hacienda San Angel has opened a new restaurant, La Cappella, which offers the most spectacular views in town,” said Chatterton.

The much-anticipated Casa Kimberly opened two years ago. A gift from Burton to Taylor in 1962, the actress kept it through several subsequent marriages.

Today, the property has nine suites, a pool, boutique spa, tequila bar and fine dining venue. Its showcase is the Puente Del Amor (Bridge of Love), connecting two wings of the property.

Design details include four-poster beds, claw foot tubs, private terrace Jacuzzis and sweeping views. Guests can stay in Elizabeth Taylor’s bedroom, replete with its original pink marble, heart-shaped bathtub and views of Banderas Bay.

“The clientele for these hotels tends to be upscale Americans and Canadians with some European and wealthy Mexicans mixed in. They tend to be very service focused, looking for personalized service and luxurious settings. We definitely have couples seeking romance as well as special occasion travel, such as anniversaries and birthdays. It’s also great for a girls’ getaway,” said Chatterton.

She adds, “Most guests have a distinct appreciation for design as that is definitely a highlight of both these properties.”

What’s new in New Orleans?

Photo: The Big Easy will be bustling throughout its tricentennial year. (photo via Flickr/Eric Gross)

If there’s one thing that New Orleans is great at, it’s throwing a party. So it should come as no surprise that the Crescent City will be celebrating its 300th birthday in style.

In fact, New Orleans has already been declared one of the best places to visit this year by such distinguished names as Condé Nast TravelerFodor’s Traveland Rough Guides.

From official tricentennial celebrations to upgrades and additions to existing attractions, the following are just a few of the best things to look for in New Orleans in 2018:

The Big Easy Hits the Big 3-0-0

While it may not look a day over 200, New Orleans really will turn 300 years-old this year. To commemorate the occasion, the Historic New Orleans Collection has announced an entire year of custom programming to celebrate.

Highlights include a bilingual exhibit that explores the city’s first few decades and a collaborative effort with the City of New Orleans 2018 Commission’s Cultural and Historical Committee called Making New Orleans Home: A Tricentennial Symposium.

Other special birthday events include an exhibit on the influence of Catholicism on the city and a display detailing the prominent role women have played in shaping New Orleans. Jazz fans will be stoked to learn that a new saxophone sculpture will also be unveiled.

Mardi Gras to the Max

While Mardi Gras is only a small piece of the puzzle that makes this city so special, it wouldn’t be a discussion of yearly events here without touching on this one-of-a-kind festival.

Carnival season is already in full swing (it kicked off on Twelfth Night, January 6th) and the fun will rapidly escalate before coming to a crescendo on Fat Tuesday, February 13th. As always, the season will be full of revelry and parades, with many Mardi Gras processions expected to incorporate the city’s tricentennial into their annual themes.

Insider’s Tips for Mardi Gras

Each year, hundreds of thousands of people descend on New Orleans for Mardi Gras festivities. Large crowds line parade routes and the streets of New Orleans for the Greatest Free Show on Earth. Here are a few tips and regulations to make sure your clients are prepared and that your Mardi Gras experience is unforgettable!

  •  Be sure to check the forecast. The weather can range from 70 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the date of Mardi Gras.
  •  Dress in comfortable, casual clothing that is weather appropriate. If rain is forecasted, a rain coat will leave you protected from the elements and keep your hands free to continue catching beads.
  •  Be festive! Revelers who dress in costume often catch more. Purple, green and gold, the official Carnival colors, can be seen throughout the city.
  •  Be sure to bring a large tote bag or backpack to put all your beads in.
  •  Get to the parade route early. The best spots go quickly.
  •  Bring a portable chair, ice chest or blanket. Parades can last all day.
  •  Allow plenty of time to maneuver large crowds.
  •  Know exactly where the parades are by downloading one of the parade tracking apps

Have Your Cake and Eat It Too

King Cakes are the official sweet treat of Mardi Gras and, for the fifth year in a row, the King Cake Festival (January 28th) will put this doughy delight on its rightful pedestal. Attendees will be able to sample dozens of King Cakes from local New Orleans bakeries with prizes up for grabs across a spectrum of categories.

Additional Art

The New Orleans Museum of Art will be expanding its splendid Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden in 2018. The grounds will be enlarged by six acres, which will provide space for an amphitheater, pedestrian bridges and several new sculptures. The best part? Just like the current garden, it will be absolutely free to enter.

And up until February 25th, art lovers will be able to catch the citywide art installation called Prospect.4. The fourth installment of this triennial exhibition is The Lotus in Spite of the Swamp, taking inspiration from the beauty of the lotus plant.

More Flights

It will be easier to reach New Orleans in 2018 as several airlines have announced new lift. German carrier Condor will be offering two flights a week this summer between New Orleans and Frankfurt, while Southwest will be flying a new nonstop service on Saturdays from Sacramento, California to New Orleans.

The Hiking Trails of Oahu

Photo: Expansive view of Oahu from the Manana Trail. (photo via Flickr/Todd Morris)

Oahu is home to hiking trails that wind through forests, valleys and mountains, offering breathtaking views at the summits. There are trails for beginners and avid travelers alike.

Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach has compiled a brief guide highlighting some of the favorite trails available for hikers to explore. Whether you’re looking for a workout, a contrast to the bustling city or just a place to clear your head, you’ll find it on the trails of Oahu.

Kaena Trail

Kaena Point State Park has multiple six- or seven-mile long hiking trails. You will have is plenty to see, as the tracks run parallel to the ocean. There are protected albatross nesting areas, and it’s an area where you might see monk seals or green sea turtles as well.

Nakoa Trail

You’ll wind through the Kahana Valley on this 2.5-mile trail. It’s located on the east side of the island and is lined with ferns, pandanus, bamboo and more—making it one of the lushest you’ll find on the island. This trail also offers swimming holes throughout the hike where you can jump in to cool off.

Manana Trail to Waimano Falls

This hike starts from Pacific Palisades, a residential area in central Oahu. It’s a quicker way to see waterfalls, as it’s only three miles round trip on moderate terrain. Waimano Falls needs a lot of rain to really get going, which means you will be hiking in mud if you’re headed to see it in its full beauty.

Short, long, steep, flat, rugged—there is a trail for any type of hiker on the beautiful island of Oahu.

The best classical Japanese cooking in Los Angeles

The first time I tried sushi it was in a very unassuming restaurant near Sunset and La Cienega Boulevard in the late 1970s, and it was great experience. I have not stopped exploring Japanese cuisine no matter where I am, whether on the road or at home. My favorite LA spot in the Japanese tradition are Niki Nakayama’s N/Naka Restaurant, and Takao for Sushi.

N/Naka’s chef and owner Niki Nakayama is a former protégé of the legendary Morihiro Onodera (once the chef/owner of Mori Sushi), though Nakayama focuses her talent on kaiseki, a classical style of Japanese cooking that dictates a specific progression of textures, temperatures, tastes and seasonal ingredients.

Niki Nakayama’s tiny Culver City spot serves a traditional kaiseki set menu. The 13-course meals are the Japanese equivalent of haute cuisine, with each course revolving around a different technique and ingredient (some ingredients are steamed, others are served sashimi-style). N/Naka is an essential spot for LA foodies, and thanks to Nakayama’s appearance on the wildly popular Netflix show Chef’s Table, it’s reached national fame, too.

À la carte is not an option: n/naka offers either a 13-course modern menu ($185) or a 13-course vegetarian menu ($160), and both can be paired with wine for $85. The menus change daily and seasonally, but there is always something to delight in: a glass filled with sea urchin and lobster in a bath of chilled dashi, maybe, or a seared diver-harvested scallop cuddled next to a warm okra pod. It can take two or three hours to get through a meal here, but it’s well worth it. Nakayama is one of LA’s best culinary talents, and scoring a meal at her restaurant is money well spent.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Chef Niki Nakayama began her career at Takao restaurant in Brentwood, working under the guidance of Chefs Morihiro Onodera and Takao Izumida. Committed to exploring new techniques, Nakayama embarked on a three-year working tour of Japan, sampling her way through various regional flavors and immersing herself in the essentials of Japanese cuisine. A formative learning experience came during Nakayama’s time working at Shirakawa-Ya Ryokan, a Japanese inn owned by relatives. While there, Nakayama trained under Chef Masa Sato in the art of kaiseki, the traditional Japanese culinary practice that emphasizes the balance and seasonality of a series of dishes.

Upon her return to Los Angeles, Nakayama opened her first restaurant, Azami Sushi Cafe, which quickly became known for her omakase menu. Inaka, Nakayama’s ambitious second venture, functioned as a Japanese takeout by day and an intimate eight-course chef’s table by night. With this project, Nakayama discovered that focusing on tasting menus allowed her to do what she enjoys most: creating a thoughtful and cohesive series of dishes that provides a personal experience for each diner. n/naka, a passion project 10 years in the making, is the expansion of Nakayama’s previous endeavors, applying the artistic and technical notions of kaiseki to create an ever-evolving seasonal narrative within each meal.

My favorite sushi sport is Takao restaurant, where Chef Niki Nakayama began her career. This Brentwood omakase restaurant highlights a rundown of the best of the ocean’s offerings, with all the classics choices such as Yellowtail, Red Snapper, and Uni served alongside the likes of Spot Prawn sashimi and Baby Red Snapper.

Takao Izumida, who previously worked at Matsuhisa, has built a loyal clientele ranging from local businessmen to families and celebrities at his namesake upscale sushi restaurant. The clean-and-spare storefront features a small L-shaped sushi bar and some linen-topped tables that provide a quieter setting for Izumida’s traditional cuisine with occasional innovative flourishes.

A plate containing a series of small compartments might show off fresh ocean delicacies like halibut fin, butter-smooth ankimo and ultra-tender sautéed abalone, while a plate of new-style sashimi, drizzled with warm olive oil, is on par with Matsuhisa’s. There’s toro tartare with caviar, lobster tail tempura, and grilled crab meat in a creamy and spicy sauce. And watching the proprietor patiently cook the multi-layered tamago (egg omelet sushi) in a specialized square skillet is a treat unto itself.

For a distinctive East-meets-West finale, consider capping off your meal with green tea crème brûlée. In addition to a lengthy saké list, the restaurant also houses quite a few respectable wine labels from California. Takao may be a perfect spot for a small bite, but beware of a big check if you come with a hearty appetite. Lunch specials are a good deal, with bento boxes, sushi and sashimi specials, and tempura bowls mostly under $20.

Checkout the Netflix documentary Chef’s Table on Chef Niki Nakayama and discover this remarkable master of Japanese cuisine.

Beijing now offers six-day visa-free stays

Travelers from more than 50 countries going through Beijing as well as Tianjin and Hebei province while transiting on to a third country can now stay visa free for up to six days.

The new policy came into effect yesterday, the South China Morning Post reports, and covers travelers holding passports from 53 countries, including most in the European Union (UK included) as well as the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea. Similar visa-free schemes have previously been launched in Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces.

Notably, the new scheme means that travelers into the northern Chinese cities and provinces can attend conferences or make short work trips without requiring a visa to enter.

These changes are the latest in a number of enhancements designed to improve and upgrade travelers’ experiences while traveling in China. Back in September, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) announced it was relaxing its restrictions on mobile device use on aircraft – a frustrating policy for business travelers in particular that meant smartphones were not allowed to be used during flights even while in airplane mode.

Meanwhile earlier this month, Star Alliance announced its plans to begin easing the transiting process at Beijing Capital International Airport, notably with the co-location of all 17 of its member airlines that serve the airport to a single terminal.

China has been linking up Beijing with Tianjin – itself one of China’s four major direct-controlled municipalities – and Hebei province ever since 2014. Expore the city with our airport and city guide.

See the Cherry Blossoms in 2018

If you are already excited about seeing the cherry blossoms this spring, there’s no time to wait. Heading to Korea from late March to early April is likely the best time to travel as a number of cherry blossom festivals take place around that time each year, and blooms are usually at their peak. For those heading to Seoul, the best time is in the beginning of April. The Yeouido Spring Flower Festival takes place on Yeouiseo-ro Road each year when the azaleas, forsythia, royal azaleas and other spring flowers are in full bloom. If visitors to Japan are looking forward to cherry blossoms, official forecasts will begin in mid to late January. The timing is much the same as in South Korea: Travelers should schedule a visit in late March to early April to catch the best of the season. There are also opportunities to see sakura closer to home. Washington, D.C., is famous for its cherry blossom bloom. Like other destinations, travelers improve their chances if they visit at the tail end of March or the first few days of April, says CherryBlossomWatch.com. The site notes that warmer winter temperatures bring an earlier bloom. Colder overall temps mean the bloom will be later.

Classy Hawaii Poolside Cabanas

Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, Hawaii Island cabana ile ilgili görsel sonucu

There was a time when the swimming pool took center stage at Hawaii hotels. These days, however, what happens on the pool deck has become as important as the action in the water. Some of the destination’s resorts present cabana packages with all the trimmings, from fruit and spritzes to meals and massages.

Here are seven of our favorite Hawaii cabana experiences. Catering to couples, families and groups of friends, they invite clients to spend a stylish day or evening by the pool.

River Cruises Have Options For Travelers Sailing Solo

The AmaDolce is one of four AmaWaterways vessels that offer a limited number of single-occupancy staterooms that require no single supplement.

While river cruising might not always come off as a travel style that lends itself to those traveling solo (it’s hard to think of a river cruise ad that doesn’t feature a couple gazing off into the distance from their balcony), there are ways in which river cruise lines have made and continue to try to make it easier for solo passengers to come aboard and have a good time while cruising.

AmaWaterways single room ile ilgili görsel sonucu

For instance, for 2018, AmaWaterways has set aside more than 145 departures, including 24 wine-themed cruises, in Europe and Asia for which solo travelers can book a stateroom without having to pay a single supplement (this applies to all stateroom categories excluding suites, A+ and AA+ categories). Solo guests who book a base category stateroom (category E or D) on any departure will have the single supplement fee waived.

Additionally, on four of its ships — the AmaDolce, AmaDante, AmaLyra and AmaCello — AmaWaterways has a limited number of specially designed, single occupancy staterooms that feature a French balcony and require no single supplement.

“We are always excited to welcome solo travelers onboard and have continued to see tremendous growth in this market,” said Kristin Karst, executive vice president and co-owner of AmaWaterways. Solo travelers will be invited to an exclusive welcome cocktail reception and are often invited to dine at a designated captain’s table in the main dining room.

Riviera River Cruises ile ilgili görsel sonucu

New for 2018, British company Riviera River Cruises has set aside two November departures next year on which the single supplement will be waived, one on the Danube and one on France’s Rhone River.

Tauck has a long-standing policy that its lower-deck Category 1 cabins never have a single supplement, and it offers a reduced single supplement on upper-deck Category 4 and 5 staterooms.

Avalon Waterways ile ilgili görsel sonucu

In some cases, the key to getting a good solo travel deal on a river cruise is to book early. In May, Avalon Waterways waived the single supplement on all of its 2018 Europe departures and select Mekong and Irrawaddy departures in Asia for a limited time, but now there are few remaining departures to which the deal still applies.

European Waterways ile ilgili görsel sonucu

And this past summer, canal barge operator European Waterways waived the single supplement on many of its hotel barge cruises for the remainder of the 2017 season. So, solo travelers just need to keep their eye out.

Seven magical places to watch the sunset in Latin America

sunset-2

Latin America boasts some of the worlds most postcard worthy beaches, particularly in Brazil and Costa Rica. As top honeymoon destinations, they wouldn’t be complete without some truly magical sunsets, and both offer them almost every night of the year. However, these aren’t the only two places to consider if you’re in search of the perfect sundown, in fact some don’t involve beaches at all. Have a read through our list of 7 magical places to watch the sunset in Latin America and you may be surprised…

1. Tamarindo, Costa Rica

The laid back, surfing town of Tamarindo on the western coastline of Costa Rica is an ideal spot to lie back, relax and enjoy the sunset. Take a seat in one of the quirky bars along the beach, order a couple of cocktails, and before you know it the whole sky will be shades of deep orange and blood red with a tint of bright purple. The reflections off the sea combined with the silhouettes of surfboards and couples strolling hand-in-hand along the shore are photographic perfection.

2. Moon Valley, Chile

The Atacama desert, in the far north of Chile, is a dry and mostly desolate place where few people visit. Only the small town of San Pedro de Atacama has managed to draw people in, and that’s mostly thanks to the nearby Valle de la Luna or ‘Valley of the Moon’. Bizarre rock formations in differing shades of red, orange, yellow and white criss-cross the region and it’s easy to see how it got its name, as it’s not dissimilar to the surface of the moon. When the sun sets on this natural spectacle, the shadows and shapes create a beautiful and unique vision of the landscape, plus excellent photo opportunities. Be sure not to rush down once the sun has disappeared though – the scene is captivating under the light of a full moon too.

atacama-sunset

3. The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

Watching the sun set whilst eating an a la carte meal, with a glass of bubbly in hand, on the deck of a luxury yacht may seem like the impossible dream, but, if you take a trip to the Galapagos, this could very much become reality. Despite the main draw being the overwhelming amount of wildlife that the islands play host to, the actual logistics of staying in the Galapagos are often overlooked. Yes, you will most likely stay on a boat as there are very few hotels, and yes, it will mean eating all of your meals on board… but what of the quality? With only a few boats allowed to access the waters surrounding the islands due to strict environmental policies the companies operating here have gone above and beyond to make sure their yachts are super luxurious to tempt in the tourists. Sundecks with al fresco dining and large observation lounges are standard, some have cabins with private balconies and it’s not unusual for the odd jacuzzi to be perfectly situated for watching the world go by. And as most Galapagos itineraries stop in a different location each night, watching the sunset from a hot tub may actually be a very real possibility…

galapagos-sunset

4. Puerto Natales, Chile

Deep in southern Chile, a tiny town named Puerto Natales sits on the edge of Last Hope Sound. This may seem an unlikely place to witness a beautiful sunset, however, if you are lucky enough to see it on a clear day, the sight is simply magical. This unique little cluster of multi-coloured houses, shops and hotels is the gateway to one of Chiles greatest tourist attractions; Torres del Paine National Park. Often shrouded in a light veil of cloud and mist, the distant mountains of the park cannot usually be seen from the town, but on the occasional clear day the view is magnificent. In the height of the Patagonia season, the sun often doesn’t set until 10 or 11pm, making it ideal for a post-dinner stroll.

pn-sunset

5. The Salt Flats, Bolivia

A visit to the salt flats in Bolivia is incredible at any time of the day, but to be there for the setting of the sun is very special indeed. These vast white swathes of white salt are a popular tourist attraction in Bolivia, and people comes here in their hundreds to capture amusing photographs, which can be taken due to the lack of perspective in this vast area. If you happen to catch the salt flats when there is a thin later of water sitting on top, the colours and reflections are quite surreal.

bolivia-sunset

6. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

With such an impressive skyline, it’s no wonder that the sunset in Rio de Janeiro is fabulous – just like the city itself. As twilight sets in and the sun seekers head home, this is the ideal time to hit the beach. From here you can watch locals playing foot volley as the heat of the day evaporates, and enjoy the silhouettes of iconic sights such as Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain. As the many lights begin to flick on across the bay, the beauty of the scene is intensified.

rio-sunset

7. Antarctica

The white continent may be better known for penguins and icebergs, but it too can offer sunsets of breath-taking colour and depth. In the summer, the sun barely goes down and this creates beautiful evenings with long shadows and colourful patterns across the clear skies. In addition, the stark white of the snow and jagged shapes of icebergs are the perfect partner to a multi-coloured sky.

The Best Safari Experience in Africa

İlgili resim

On a private island within Botswana’s Okavango Delta lies a safari camp often described as the best safari experience in Africa – if not the world. With one of the densest concentrations of wild predatory animals in the modern world, Mombo proves a sort of uber-luxury Jurassic Park that wows those long past the Singita’s and chain safari companies of the world. To visit Mombo, you need to plan well in advance as it books up literally years in advance and has become a jetsetter right of passage for global adventures and bon vivants looking for the ultimate safari experience.

mombo safari camp ile ilgili görsel sonucu

For those expecting the usual luxury African safari experience of gilded tents and opulent service, Mombo delivers on first sight with a circular drive and suspended walkway that leads to the glamorous main camp. Mombo is a different kind of safari camp and walking toward the lodge you are made well aware that you’re part of the African food chain at this unfenced wildlife camp where wildlife lurks around almost every corner. The main camp is divided between two large thatched roof lodges accented in native African décor of natural hides and locally quarried stone with a modern colonial vibe. Connecting the two lodges is a massive deck with circular fire pit with sequestered pool area that rounds out the main lodge. Style mixes native African design elements like natural hides and locally quarried stone with a modern colonial style that’s almost constantly upgraded to maintain its standing as the premiere safari camp in Botswana.

mombo safari camp lions ile ilgili görsel sonucu

While some safari camps are cluttered with honeymoon couples and posh families, Mombo has a different pedigree that includes celeb couples and adventure-seekers on six-week breaks across Africa with private guide (and plane) in tow. The camp itself includes only nine tents that look more like abstract extraterrestrial villas suspended 15-feet above the ground to allow for uninterrupted passage of animals. Inside, these canvas tents are divided between living areas that open to long terraces with your own outdoor observation deck. Bedrooms feature dramatic four-poster beds next to open-flow bathrooms with double showers that access an additional outdoor shower that we weren’t ever brave enough to use following too many “man dies on safari” google searches. But it’s the wildlife that is the true star of Mombo, with its 20-count prides of voracious lions and close-encounters with wild dogs and hyena that make it the best safari lodge in all of Africa.

The Magic of Buenos Aires

Magical Buenos Aires

By Stephen Chrisanthus

Those that love travel often fall in love with every city they visit for a short spell. We travelers get drawn into certain aspects of a city and fall under its intoxicating characteristics or energy, whether it be the exhilaration of some crisp, snow covered peaks, the cultural electricity of a bustling metropolis or the breeze of a remote beachside town that stirs up its history and aromas. Seldom does one find themselves in a magical place that incites all of the senses at such a primal level that it changes your perspective on things, and awakens you to such a degree you want to chuck it all and move there. I didn’t relocate, but Buenos Aires, Argentina moved me.

The daily flights on Latam Airlines, Argentina’s most reliable transport from Buenos Aires to the United States, seem to always fill up so grab your business class seat early. The 9-hour direct flight from Miami seems to be comprised mostly of Latin Americans and Europeans, leaving me to believe this Shangri-La, south of Uruguay, is relatively unknown to most in the North.

Upon arriving, the invigorating, herb scented air is the first thing to draw you in. Just on the 30-minute ride into the city from the airport you sense you are somewhere special. The city itself reminds me of a Latin New York City built like Rome, Italy smothered in European influence. The history, architecture and energy create a never-ending landscape of excitement and activity. With a population of over 3 million people and a greater metropolitan area of around 14 million you get a bustling urban area with a mix of cultures. But even with such a large population, the geography is laid out in a way in which you never feel overrun with people. The only obvious congestion, which transcends the entire area, is that of the roadways. Patience is a must, but every car seems to be an Uber so you’ll have no problem getting a ride. One you are in the borough you seek I insist you walk, as it is the best way to let the charm of the city engulf and embrace you.

With a sprawling metropolis of this magnitude you have no lack of options for accommodations. If you can manage to secure a room at the 5 star Palacio Duhau Park Hyatt you’ll be in for a treat. The hotel and art gallery are gorgeous, and all the Palace rooms are suites with chandeliers and working fireplaces. The hotel has a delicious glamour to it that resonates through its assortment of dining options. The Duhua Restaurante & Vinoteca offers sophisticated Argentinian Cuisine and the most delectable cuts of beef. Dine in the elegant Garden Terrace, and stop in The Oak Bar for a cocktail. After dinner or lunch satisfy your sweet tooth with a famous signature macaroon from the Duhau Patisserie which locals regularly frequent.

For a more modern feel with unique accents, the Emperador Hotel is another one of Buenos Aires best hotels. Steps away from art galleries and museum district of the distinguished Recoleta neighborhood, you can take in the fresh ocean air coming in off the Puerto Madero Harbor. With every amenity one could desire, in the tranquility of an urban oasis, you will enjoy the vibe and location of this contemporary gem.

Food, ah yes food. Buenos Aires will over satisfy your palette and lust for tantalizing treats for the mouth. Just walking the streets you could bop into enough markets brimming with local meats and cheeses to transform the day into one long feeding, but there are a number of eateries you should just not miss. The historic Café Biela is a must for lunch and people watching. It’s a happening café with a rich list of famous guests and a variety of tasty selections. Kick back and let the afternoon pass in the aromatic afternoon air, sipping on a regional wine and chatting with the locals. Owner Carlos Gutierrez will most likely be on site, snag him for a lesson on the history of the café and the area. When you are finished walk across the street to one of the city’s most famous attractions, the beautiful La Recoleta Cemetery, and pay a visit to the resting place of Eva Peron, set to the soundtrack of live music resonating from the street.

Lunch just isn’t enough? I always thought there should be another meal before dinner. Head to Tea Time in the Alvear Palace Hotel. Enjoy an amazing array of assorted snacks while sipping tea in an atmosphere that will surely make you feel like royalty. When the tea runs dry, I recommend a short exploration of the hotel and a stroll through the streets that surround it. If after getting ready for dinner you realize you’re early, and in Buenos Aires dinnertime is late for most of us, take the opportunity to go to The Library in the Faena Hotel. It’s one of coolest most fun places to get your night started in the city. The hotel itself is makes you feel like your somewhere exclusive. Lit in red light and abound with stylish locals and guests, you’ll feel like the in-crowd. The Library has an amazing drink and wine selection and the appetizers could spoil your appetite, in that there are so many you’ll want to sample. If that wasn’t enough they have great live music and an outdoor area that you could chill at all night. Definitely go, but try not to miss your dinner plans because it’s addictive!

The incredible options for dinner are countless, and can be experienced a number of ways. One of my all-time favorite dining experiences was dinner at Casa Coupage with owner Santiago Mymicopulo. Once in the coveted 4-table backroom you will be at the whim of this master chef and sommelier. Don’t interfere; he will unleash a barrage of creations and pairings that will leave you in disbelief. It is a one of a kind experience you will not soon forget. Looking for chic, upscale dining in a hip part of town, try dinner at Casa Cruz. Dark wood and elegant lighting set the mood for a special occasion or a night to feel fancy. Share a diversely decadent selection of appetizers, or split entrees, either way you are in for a dinner worth dressing up for. If you have a little pep in your step and want to try something original to Argentina there is another option. Being in the birthplace of the tango obligates you for a tango dinner show at some point. There are plenty to choose from but you can’t go wrong with the Esquina Carlos Gardel. The dancers are amazing, the wine doesn’t stop flowing and you are guaranteed a fun time.

Just running around this great city you will come across enough attractions, events and activities to keep you occupied and entertained for a lifetime. With beautiful parks, historic monuments and happening thoroughfares everywhere, you get pulled around as if led by an invisible leash held by an aimless wandering, excitement filled master, which is Buenos Aires. One place you are sure to be led is the Teatro Colon, one of the most important opera houses in the world, said by Luciano Pavarotti to be the only one to have perfect sound. Opened in 1908, it is a pride of Argentina culture and one of its most iconic structures. Go for a ballet, opera, classical music concert, or just take a tour.

And speaking of tours, the Palacio Barolo Tour is divine for anyone interested in Italian history and Dante Alighieri. The Palacio Barolo was designed in accordance with the cosmology of Dante’s Divine Comedy. There are 22 floors, divided into three sections. The basement and ground floor represent hell, floors 1-14 are the purgatory, and 15-22 represent heaven. The skyscraper was constructed to house Dante’s ashes by Luis Barolo who believed “that Europe had begun drifting toward collapse” and wanted to house them as far away as possible from the Continent. The tour is incredibly interesting; culminating in the roof top dome where you are welcomed by miraculous 360-degree views of the city (as it was once the tallest building in whole of South America) accompanied by a live cellist. You will truly feel as though you are looking down through heaven.

There really is just so much to do and see. Catch a legendary football match or visit their world-class planetarium, the spectrum and variety of entertainment is vast. The city lends itself to those who want to really live an exciting and fulfilling life and it opens its arms to those enlightened enough to visit. The people are amazing, the food exquisite, the landscape breathtaking and the energy in the air consuming. Buenos Aires really is a magical place.

Visit Ireland’s ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Filming Locations

İlgili resim

The highly anticipated “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” debuts on movie screens mid-December — and fans can expect a whole lot of Ireland. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” the previous film in the series, hints at the country’s role: In its last scene, Rey (played by Daisy Ridley) finally locates Luke Skywalker (played by Mark Hamill) hiding on a remote island, homesteading in a stone hut that resembles a beehive.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the hard-to-reach (located about 8 miles off the mainland coast of County Kerry) Skellig Michael island was the perfect location for a Jedi to hide away from the world, or rather, the entire universe. Considered by monks as “a place between heaven and earth, close to God,” what could be a better refuge for Luke Skywalker? And this is where the new film takes off.

Enchanted by the landscape and friendly locals during the filming of “The Force Awakens,” the location scouts revisited Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way — a tourism trail that’s located at different points of Ireland’s coast — searching for new filming locations for “The Last Jedi.” It wasn’t difficult: Southwest Ireland is famous for craggy coastal cliffs whipped by winds and wave-washed beaches. Of course, the weather helps. Sunshine and blue skies produce jaw-dropping views and lovely temperatures, but when fog cloaks the rambling headlands, it’s easy to imagine lightsaber duels and all manner of Jedi modus operandi. And for Star Wars fans, the dramatic coastal landscape entices with a special tour de “force” of sites to discover in Ireland, from Donegal to Cork.

Below are stellar locations used for filming “The Last Jedi” movie, which will help clients make the most of an Ireland Star Wars experience.

Brow Head and Crookhaven in County Cork

İlgili resim

Rich in maritime heritage, the village of Crookhaven is a short drive from Brow Head. Once a major coastal trading post, it’s now a seaside getaway for urban dwellers with plenty of holiday homes and inns located on the pier.

Brow Head offers an incredible vista to peer across to Mizen Head, Ireland’s most southwest point and home to the Fastnet Rock Lighthouse, a landmark for sailors and racing enthusiasts. Clients who enjoy kayaking and diving can explore secluded beaches and coves. Daredevils might even try classes in coasteering: exploring a rocky coastline by swimming, jumping and climbing. In addition, visitors to the area can take boat trips for deep-sea fishing or dolphin and whale watching.

Expert Tip: Tour Mizen Head Signal Station, an award-winning maritime heritage museum and one of Marconi’s first telegraph stations. It’s not just an indoor experience; there are views aplenty for conjuring up soaring images of the Millennium Falcon or perhaps a certain Wookiee. Coaches and bus tours are welcome.

Inishowen Peninsula and Malin Head in County Donegal

Every location along the Wild Atlantic Way offers stunning scenery — and the Inishowen peninsula on Ireland’s northern tip is no different. Some call it the “hidden jewel” of the Irish landscape. Along with picturesque villages and a sea-wrapped peninsula, golden-sand beaches lay claim to some of Ireland’s best surfing destinations. Beginners and pros will find something to like here.

Culdaff Beach is one of the most popular spots, while beginners can head to Tullagh Bay, where Inishowen Surf School holds classes and camps for kids and adults. There are several trails, but Inishowen Heritage Trail is the best option for hikers who would like to explore the cultural history of the area. There are 14 stops along the trail, including ancient forts, castles, stone circles and high crosses. Cyclists can pedal the winding roads and take in the views at their own pace, too.

Loop Head in County Clare

The Loop Head Peninsula Drive on the west end of Kilkee is one of the most scenic coastal drives along the Wild Atlantic Way. Clients should plan a leisurely half day for stops along the way to see the sites as they circle around the coastline of Loop Head. Star Wars filming occurred on the cliffs of Loop Head, and a tour of the famous Loop Head Lighthouse offers a chance to peer out onto the headland to scout for cliff locations where the Rebel Alliance might have passed through.

Expert Tip: After checking out Loop Head Lighthouse, drive inland for a lunch of freshly caught seafood at Keating’s Bar and Restaurant, which overlooks Kilbaha Bay on the mouth of River Shannon.

Malin Head

The cliff known as “Hell’s Hole” seems like a reasonable place to film the Millennium Falcon spaceship — at least, that was the rumor among locals. Star Wars crew members  were deadly silent about the film’s production, but they did enjoy some good Irish “craic,” or gossip, while in the village of Malin.

Expert Tip: A crew hangout, Farren’s Bar on Malin Head can’t be missed. Shining like a beacon, a mural of Yoda welcomes all galactic travelers.

Skellig Michael (Great Skellig)

As noted above, the remote island that Luke Skywalker had chosen for hiding really exists. Also known as Great Skellig, Skellig Michael was inhabited by sixth-century monks seeking refuge away from invaders. They considered it the “island on the edge of the world.” Seafaring sailors, soldiers and Vikings had to contend with the fierce open ocean to reach the island. Once on land, in order to reach the monastery, they were confronted with more than 600 uneven stone steps leading straight up.

Today’s Star Wars fans can visit Skellig Michael via a boat tour. However, accessing the stony isle does pose a few challenges, including cooperative weather and the strength to ascend the steep (and guard rail-free) steps to the monastery.

Expert Tip: Clients with vertigo can instead stop by the Skellig Experience Center, which offers a great introduction into learning about the two Skellig Islands, Skellig Michael and Little Skellig. The center also offers listings of boat operators and tours that land on and visit Skellig Michael as well as boat tours that do not make landings.

Sybil Head and Dingle in County Kerry

A large part of the filming took place on Sybil Head in Ballyferriter, which is about a 25-minute drive from Dingle. Pocketed with small farms and sheep dotting the headland and meadows, Sybil Head is idyllic and peaceful. Visit the location now, and no evidence can be found of the massive ancient Jedi Temple set resembling the Skellig Michael beehive huts — the replica was disassembled after filming, leaving the location as magical as before.

Expert Tip: Book a tee time or plan a weekend golfing package for clients at Europe’s most westerly course. Dingle Golf Club Ceann Sibeal overlooks Sybil Head, the scenic panorama of the Dingle Peninsula.
