Hawaii Travel: When Will Hawaii Call For Tourists to Return?

Breaking Wave on Oahu’s North Shore

As Hawaii marks one year since the inception of its Safe Travels Hawaii program – arguably the most restrictive COVID-19 protocols in the country – the question now becomes when the islands will issue a call for tourists to return.

Hawaii Gov. David Ige said two months ago that “now is not a good time to visit” the state and asked tourists to stay away as it battles a surge in coronavirus cases.

The Safe Travels Hawaii program requires visitors to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test to avoid quarantine, but Ige’s proclamation took it a step further.

Lt. Gov. Josh Green, the Hawaii COVID-19 Healthcare Liaison, said the program will likely be around for the foreseeable future.

“I think, at least, through the end of this holiday season,” Green said, according to KHON2 in Honolulu. “The reason for that is that there’s a higher COVID rate on the mainland, and we’re still adjusting to the prospect of bringing international travel here. So, we wouldn’t want to kind of make too many large changes all at once.”

But while the program might continue to exist, COVID-19 cases are dropping in Hawaii – the state just reported a seven-day average of 167 new daily cases on Oct. 9, compared to 337 two weeks ago, according to the San Francisco Chronicle – and the state is 90 percent vaccinated, the highest ratio in the U.S.

But according to multiple reports out of Hawaii, Ige could make an announcement encouraging tourists to return in as soon as two weeks.

“We are working on the timing and the message right now,” Ige said. “It’s not an instant on-and-off kind of situation, it does take (the visitor industry) time to rehire people back, and we do want to make sure that when we invite people back that we have space and we have restaurants and other activities for them to do.”

Ige said he is working with the Hawaii Tourism Authority and other industry organizations to determine the best way to re-extend invitations for travelers.

Autumn in the Adirondacks

Raquette Lake Fall Sunrise, Adirondacks

Mount Jo, Adirondacks
Upstate New York’s Adirondack Park is one of the top places in the country to experience vibrant fall foliage. The park itself covers approximately 6 million acres, with autumn colors emerging usually from mid September to mid October. The display is something incredible to behold with your own eyes, as the landscape transforms into one of Mother Nature’s fine works of art. Whether you’re interested in hiking one of the High Peaks, taking it easy on a nature trail, cycling, or venturing out on a road trip to capture it all with your camera, there’s something for every type of leaf-peeper. From Lake George to the Keene Valley and over to the uncrowded shores of the western lakes, the Adirondacks do some serious shining during the fall months.

Let these photos take you through autumn in the Adirondacks and some of the best ways to embrace the season in the area.

Sunrise from Owl’s Head Mountain
A sunrise hike during the fall season in the Adirondacks will be worth the early wake-up, promise. Choosing a shorter trail to navigate in the dark for your hike up to the summit is a smart choice, and Owl’s Head Mountain just outside of Lake Placid is ideal. This 1.2 mile (round trip) trek lands you on a rocky summit with panoramic views of the surrounding area. A few fun rock scrambles make this more than your average easy hike, but it’s suitable for all skill levels, deeming it popular for families with younger children. Several overlooks along the way to the top are a big bonus. If you make the hike at sunrise, bring a headlamp and be prepared for an awe-inspiring start to your morning as the sky lights up; you may even have the whole place to yourself.

**It should be noted that this trail is on private land, and hiking is only allowed on weekdays.

Keene Valley Lodge
Keene Valley is one of the best locations to base yourself in the High Peaks region. Stay small, right on scenic Route 73 at the Keene Valley Lodge for a classic Adirondack bed + breakfast experience, as well as quick access to some of the most popular hiking trails in the area. Oh, and the homemade muffins, too. Centrally located in the midst of amazing trails, the scenic Ausable River, and breweries, the lodge is also within close proximity to Lake Placid, without all the hustle and bustle.

The recently renovated historic building is run by a warm and welcoming couple, owners George and Laurie Daniels. Here, you’ll find cozy common rooms to hang out and read Adirondack literature, pour over maps, plan your adventures, and chat with other lodgers during the daily breakfast, fit for fueling hikers. There’s a common kitchen area too where you can store and make simple meals if you get back from a hike post restaurant hours.

Roadside Adirondack Views in Newcomb
One of the easiest views of the High Peaks to enjoy is right off of Route 28N, at Newcomb’s Overlook Park. From here, you’ll have a sprawling view of the Santinoni Range, Iroquois and Algonquin Mountains, Mount Colden, and on a clear day, you might even spot Mount Marcy. The monument offers details about the mountains in view, including their towering height totals. Bring a picnic lunch, snap a few photos, stretch your legs, and use the onsite restrooms — this is an ideal rest stop in the heart of the Adirondacks.

Heart Lake, Adirondack Loj
Iconic Heart Lake at the Adirondack Loj is one of the gorgeous spots to view foliage with easy access. Although lodging is available both in the lodge and campsites, it’s possible to visit for the day and use the trail system for just a parking fee. Heart Lake is the easiest hike, suitable for all ages; a loop trail skirts the lake for an easy 1.2 mile walk with beautiful views. This is the perfect place to absorb fall foliage at a leisurely speed, capturing photos along the way from various angles. Not to mention the lake is shaped like a heart, so it’s pretty romantic, too.

**Pro tip: arrive after 1pm and pay a reduced parking fee.

Big Crow Mountain
For a littler lesser-known hike in the Keene Valley region, Big Crow Mountain is a great “bang for your buck” choice. The trail begins at the end of a dirt road (closed in winter) called O’Toole Lane, and although it’s a climb, the length makes this a doable trail for hikers of all skill levels. This 1.4 mile (round trip) trek will give your legs a workout without being too strenuous, and reward you with sweeping mountain views that will take your breath away as much as the steep sections of the trail. The summit offers plenty of space and various angles to take in the panorama, which includes nearby Hurricane mountain, The Great Range, and the High Peaks. If you want to extend your hike, continue further to Little Crow (another half mile), or complete the lengthier 6 mile Soda Range loop.

Floatplane Adventure
Hopping on a floatplane for a scenic flight is one of the most breathtaking ways to experience fall foliage in the Adirondacks with a bird’s eye perspective. Payne’s Air Service in Inlet, New York, offers scenic flights taking off from Seventh Lake in the western section of the Adirondacks. The knowledeable pilot will have you soaring over mountains, lakes, rivers, streams, while sharing information about the wild landscape. Flying high above the Adirondacks will grant you the opportunity to view remote sections of the park that you wouldn’t otherwise get to see. Payne’s offers fly-in fishing, camping, and hunting trips, as well as scenic flights.

Roadside Waterfalls
The Adirondacks practically beg for a roadtrip in the autumn with an abundance of scenic drives throughout the park. Discover roadside gems on the Route 73 through the High Peaks region, known as one of the incredible Scenic Byways. Roaring Brook Falls is one of these cascades located just before entering the Keene Valley. View it’s splendor from the roadside pull-off, or a less than half of a mile easy hike to the base of the falls. If you’re looking to check out the view from the top, continue on the trail for another moderate mile or so to the Upper lookout.

Mount Jo Hike
Mount Jo is another gem starting at the Adirondack Loj, and is perfect to pair with a visit to Heart Lake. Two trails lead to the summit; the short trail at 1.1 miles to the top, and the long trail (a little easier on the knees) is 1.3 miles to the top, one way. This venture can also be done as a loop trail. For a relatively easy hike, you’ll definitely still get a workout and be wowed with solid views at the summit. Peer down at Heart Lake from above, framed by hues of autumnal color and mountains in the distance. This is great option for sunset watching, provided you have a headlamp in tow. The sweeping views highlighted by the evening light is a memory for the books.

Paddle For Views
Paddling the many lakes and ponds in the Adirondacks is another enjoyable way to absorb the fall splendor. Seriously…there’s over 3,000 of them! Almost anywhere you go in the park, there’s a lake or pond not too far away. Bring your own kayak or canoe, rent one, or perhaps you’ll happen upon a canoe left for use by the state or private fishermen or hunters that use them regularly. To increase your chance of finding one of these special canoes, embark on a hike to a pond or lake; the remote spots tend to have one.

Elk Lake Lodge
Wake up to endless views of the High Peaks from the secluded Elk Lake Lodge, where loons and the breakfast bell provide the soundtrack. The cozy lodge is located near North Hudson, New York, and is positioned in the middle of some of the most incredible and unspoiled Adirondack scenery. Choose from one of the main lodge rooms, or the gorgeous individual cottages; all three meals are included. Almost anywhere you hang out near the lodge, you’re treated to views of Dix, Macomb, and Nippletop mountains, as well as the Colvin Range. A wide porch lined with Adirondack chairs, beach, or floating dock offer a relaxing post for absorbing the scenery, as does the onsite canoe, kayak, or rowboats. Or, hit one of the many hiking trails and check off some of the High Peaks.

Nature Trails
The Preserve at Elk Lake Lodge has 12,000 acres of Adirondack land with a myriad of trails to explore. If you prefer easier walks vs. tackling the High Peaks, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the property at a slower pace. The lodge provides a map for a choose your own adventure itinerary, with waterfalls, bridges, and stunning scenery await to be discovered. The suspension bridge trail is the perfect, easy hike along the picturesque Branch River with plenty of foliage. Or, head to Clear Pond, just a few minutes from the lodge, where you can hike around the shore’s circuit leisurely.

Adirondack Balloon Festival
Every September, the Adirondack region is host to a hot air balloon festival with autumn foliage as the beautiful backdrop. The Adirondack Balloon Festival is a four day event held at the Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport in Queensbury, New York. More than 50 balloons of all shapes, sizes, and characters, inflate for several launches, the most popular being the sunrise flights and the evening “Moonglow.” A craft fair, food, and other activities make this a fun event for families. Whether you book a thrilling balloon ride yourself or watch from the ground with a hot coffee in hand, it’s a fall festival not to be missed.

Pinnacle Trail
A quick jaunt up the Pinnacle Trail near Bolton Landing, New York, offers sprawling views of Lake George in the southern Adirondacks. In about three quarters of a mile, you’ll reach the coveted summit overlook where you can feast your eyes on Buck and Sleeping Beauty Mountains, Shelving Rock, the Tongue Mountain Range, Dome Island, and the Narrows. You can even spot the famous and historic Sagamore Resort below. Dogs are allowed on a leash, and a bench at the top provides an idyllic spot to enjoy a snack or packed lunch.

Lake Camping
Fall camping is ideal camping; cooler temperatures, little to no bugs, and spectacular foliage, of course. Venture out in the Adirondacks and find a treasure trove of drive-in, hike-in, paddle-in, and island camping spots. Lake George, Saranac Lake, and Raquette Lake are just some of the bodies of water with island camping in the park. While some are first-come, first-serve, others like the Glen Islands in Lake George require a booking from May to October. There are also many campsites and RV sites available throughout the area. For more remote slumbering, consider primitive camping in the backcountry such as the Pharoah Lakes Wilderness or Cranberry Lake Wild Forest. Whether pitching a tent or cozy-ing up in a lean-to, this type of camping makes for the perfect fall adventure. Make sure to follow all rules and guidelines when camping in the Adirondacks (and everywhere else) and to always leave it better than you found it.

UK Replaces Post-Travel PCR Tests With Cheaper Rapid Testing Option

COVID-19 lateral flow test and result form with U.K. flag.

The British government just announced that fully vaccinated (and most under-18) travelers arriving in the United Kingdom (U.K.) from non-red-list countries will soon be able to use cheaper lateral flow tests (LFTs) instead of PCR tests to fulfill their post-arrival COVID-19 testing requirements.

The U.K.’s entry rules require that post-arrival tests be booked prior to boarding a U.K.-bound flight, and taken as soon as possible upon passengers’ arrival or a maximum of 48 hours after their entry into the country.

The new LFT option will become available on October 24, and travelers can begin booking them from October 22, according to a government press release. The list of approved LFt testing private providers will also go live on gov.uk on October 22, including convenient testing centers located in some airports.

Not only are LFTs cheaper, but they offer faster results. Visitors will need to take a photo of their lateral flow test and send it back to their chosen provider, along with their booking reference information, for verification of their results.

Because the change will come just in time for U.K. residents returning from their half-term breaks, it was noted that NHS ‘Test and Trace’ tests cannot be used to fulfill international travel requirements.

Any individuals who test positive will need to self-isolate and take a PCR test to confirm their results.

Health and Social Care Secretary Sajid Javid said: “We want to make going abroad easier and cheaper, whether you’re traveling for work or visiting friends and family. Lateral flow tests will be available later this month for those returning from half-term holidays. This change to testing is only possible thanks to the incredible progress of our vaccination program, which means we can safely open up travel as we learn to live with the virus.”

Grant Shapps, Secretary of State for Transport, said: “Today’s rule changes will make testing on arrival simpler and cheaper for people across the country who are looking forward to well-earned breaks for this October half term. Taking away expensive mandatory PCR testing will boost the travel industry and is a major step forward in normalizing international travel and encouraging people to book holidays with confidence.”

Dr. Jenny Harries, Chief Executive of the U.K. Health Security Agency (UKHSA), said: “Testing, along with vaccines, remains one of our first lines of defense against COVID-19. Getting a test as early as possible on arrival, and isolation when necessary, can help control the spread of the virus and protect one another.”

The world’s 20 most peaceful cities

Reykjavik capital city of iceland. (photo via patpongs/iStock/Getty Images Plus)

It seems that the many effects of the COVID-19 pandemic that we’re all living with on a daily basis may be affecting us even more than we’re aware of. Earlier this year, the American Psychological Association released some survey results, which revealed just how profound the impacts of living amid a prolonged pandemic have been.

According to its research, substantial portions of the adult population feel that their mental health has worsened since the onset of COVID-19, with Gen Z being most likely to say so (46 percent). Gen Xers were second-most-likely with 33 percent reporting the same sentiment, followed by 31 percent of Millennials, 28 percent of Boomers and nine percent of older adults.

With World Mental Health Day coming up on October 10, Iceland’s flagship airline decided to conduct its own investigation using the American Psychological Association’s findings as a jumping-off point. Realizing that our surroundings have a massive influence on our stress levels and overall mental wellbeing, Icelandair did a study to discover those places on the planet that offer the highest levels of tranquility.

Analyzing places based upon such criteria as happiness levels, traffic congestion, crowding, and light and noise pollution, the airline rated various spots around the globe and wound up producing a list of the top 20 most relaxing cities in the world.

First place went to Bergen, Norway, which soared in the ranking due to low levels of traffic congestion (13 percent), minor amounts of light and noise pollution, and a long average life expectancy of 83 years, according to Travel + Leisure reported.

Perth, the capital of Western Australia, took second place. An urban oasis situated on the coast, it’s home to Kings Park and Botanic Garden—one of the world’s largest inner-city parks—vineyards, white-sand beaches, bays where you can swim with dolphins, and islands where you can snap photos of penguins, sea lions and quokkas (possibly the cutest creatures on Earth)

Reykjavik, Iceland, the world’s northernmost capital city, came in third. It ranked highly, in part, because of its stunning location and awe-inspiring natural surroundings. While it’s a frigid climate, the area is filled with geothermal hot springs thanks to Reykjavik’s volcanic activity, so that there are warm natural pools to be enjoyed year-round.

When looking at the top 20 list, there are a few countries that stand out with multiple cities that made the list. Australia boasted a total of four serene cities: Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. Neighboring New Zealand contributed three to the list, as did the United States.

Top 20 most tranquil cities:

Bergen, Norway
Perth, Australia
Reykjavik, Iceland
Helsinki, Finland
Wellington, New Zealand
Zurich, Switzerland
Brisbane, Australia
Melbourne, Australia
Stockholm, Sweden
Auckland, New Zealand
Oslo, Norway
Sydney, Australia
Copenhagen, Denmark
Tel Aviv, Israel
Christchurch, New Zealand
Toronto, Canada
San Jose, Costa Rica
Dallas, United States
Houston, United States

The most neighborly cities in the USA

A tourist getting directions

Neighbors can be both a blessing and a curse, but did you know that some cities are just more neighborly than others? Neighbor, a search engine for self-storage options, looked at everything from number of hours residents spent volunteering to the number of nonprofits per 100,000 residents to find the top 25 most neighborly cities in America. Can you guess which ones took the top spots?

Madison, Wisconsin

It’s no surprise that in first place is a Midwestern city. Madison, Wisconsin is the state’s capital and a booming college town. Unlike it’s Milwaukee, its industrial counterpart, Madison offers a more diverse job market, paving the way for companies like nonprofits. It currently has the highest amount of nonprofits per 100,000 residents in the entire country! It’s also been rated as the fourth happiest city in the country by WalletHub. With a low crime rate and ample opportunities to volunteer thanks to its number of nonprofits, it’s no wonder the city is rated as the most neighborly in the country. Plus, the Midwest is known for its neighborliness, except perhaps when sports are involved.

Rochester, New York

Rochester, New York is ranked as the second most neighborly city in the country, rising from tenth place back in 2020. It ranks fifth in the nation for volunteering and 4th for neighborly acts, as well as 17th for charitable donations.

Portland, Oregon

Portland, Oregon rose from its spot in fifth place to third this year, ranking tenth in the nation for charitable donations, giving, volunteering and neighborly acts. It’s also considered the 17th happiest city in the nation, too, which could influence why people are so apt to help each other out.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Another Midwestern university city, Minneapolis climbed into fourth place from its spot in sixth place in 2020. It’s one of the top ten happiest cities in the nation and ranks in the top 10 for charitable giving, volunteering and neighborly acts. It ranks fourteen in the nation for number of nonprofits per 100,000 residents.

Des Moines, Iowa

Des Moines, Iowa is the fifth most neighborly city in America. It ranks ninth for the number of nonprofits per 100,000 residents, eleventh for volunteering and is considered the sixteenth happiest city in the nation.

Washington, D.C.

Our nation’s capital is the sixth most neighborly city in America, rising from its spot in seventh place in 2020. It ranks sixth in charitable giving and number of nonprofits, ranking thirteenth in the nation for volunteering. It’s also considered the 21st happiest city in the nation.

Boston, Massachusetts

New to the list of the nation’s most neighborly cities, the multicultural city of Boston ranks seventh overall, taking third place for the number of nonprofits and fourth for charitable giving.

Seattle, Washington

Seattle has risen from its spot as the thirteenth most neighborly city in the nation to take eighth place this year! The home of Starbucks ranks fifth in the nation for charitable giving and is considered one of the happiest cities to live in.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is another new city to this list, ranking ninth overall this year. It ranks ninth in the nation for charitable giving and eleventh for its number of nonprofits.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The second Wisconsin city on this list, the industrial city of Milwaukee ranks as the tenth most neighborly city in America. The home of the Milwaukee Bucks didn’t make it into last year’s rankings, but this year is considered one of the top ten for charitable giving, neighborly acts and volunteering.

Raleigh, North Carolina

While Raleigh, North Carolina ranks eleventh overall, it ranks 54th in number of nonprofits and 55th for charitable giving. But when it really comes down to it, Raleigh has a very low crime rate and ranks third in the nation for neighborly acts of kindness.

San Jose, California

In twelfth place is San Jose, California. It’s considered the fifth happiest city in the nation, ranking low in crime and high in charitable giving, number of nonprofits and volunteering.

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is another new addition this year, ranking as the thirteenth most neighborly city in the nation. It’s home to the seventh highest number of nonprofits per 100,000 residents.

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Grand Rapids, Michigan has risen from 20th place last year to fourteenth this year, due to its rise as one of the happiest cities in the nation. The Midwest neighborliness is strong with this one.

Bridgeport, Connecticut

Bridgeport, Connecticut has risen one spot from 2020, ranking fifteenth in the nation for neighborliness this year. Home to the second highest number of nonprofits in the country, it also ranks 26th for neighborly acts of kindness.

Salt Lake City, Utah

Salt Lake City, Utah has fallen from its spot as the second most neighborly city in the nation to the sixteenth this year due to its low numbers of nonprofits per number of residents. It still ranks well in the other categories, though, earning it the sixteenth spot.

Spokane, Washington

Spokane, Washington fell from eighth place to seventeenth this year, but it still ranks high for neighborly acts of kindness and volunteering.

Oxnard, California

Another new city on this list, Oxnard, California ranks as the eighteenth most neighborly city in the nation. It is ranked as the tenth safest city in the country and also ranks high for happiness.

Allentown, Pennsylvania

Allentown, Pennsylvania is a newcomer to the list, ranking nineteenth overall. It ranks 16th for low crime rates and 29th for its rate of volunteering.

Indianapolis, Indiana

Indianapolis, Indiana ranks as the twentieth most neighborly city in the nation, ranking ninth for volunteering and 23rd for neighborly acts of kindness.

Colorado Springs, Colorado

Colorado Springs, Colorado fell from last year’s spot in fourteenth place down to 21st. While it ranks first for volunteering, it’s crime rates are fairly high and it scored low in charitable giving.

It ranks second in the nation for both charitable giving and volunteering, plus it has the second-lowest crime rates in the nation. Why is it in 23rd place, then? It also ranks 97th in the nation for number of nonprofits.

Baltimore, Maryland

The 24th most neighborly city in the country is Baltimore, Maryland. It ranks seventh for charitable giving, tenth for neighborly acts and seventeenth for volunteering.

San Francisco, California

One of the happiest cities in the nation, San Francisco finishes off the list at 25th place, ranking fifth in the nation for its high number of nonprofits per 100,000 residents.

The best US cities for vegan and vegetarian food

Man enjoying a vegetarian meal

WalletHub recently compared the 100 largest U.S. cities across 16 key indicators of vegan- and vegetarian-friendliness, including factors like the cost of groceries for vegetarians, the share of restaurants serving meatless options and salad shops per capita, to determine the best and most affordable destinations for travelers following a plant-based diet. Here’s a look at the 20 cities that fare the best in 2021.

1. Portland, Oregon

Earning an overall score of 63.52—nearly eight points better than second place—Portland is far and away the best U.S. city for vegans and vegetarians in 2021, ranking third for diversity, accessibility and quality and seventh for vegetarian lifestyle. WalletHub found that Portland is tied for the most juice and smoothie bars per capita and ranks fourth for the most farmers markets and CSA programs and vegetable nurseries per capita.

2. Orlando, Florida

While certainly best known for its theme parks and family-friendly attractions, it turns out that Orlando is quite the destination for vegans and vegetarians in 2021. The Florida city ranks second for diversity, accessibility and quality, is tied for the most salad shops per capita and trails only rival Miami for the most vegetable nurseries per capita.

3. Los Angeles, California

Ranking eighth for vegetarian lifestyle, Los Angeles is able to overcome its 35th place ranking for affordability to finish third overall when it comes to an all-American meatless experience. The City of Angels earns an overall score of 55.71 in WalletHub’s study, more than 10 points better than 20th-ranked Las Vegas but still far off from the country’s most vegan- and vegetarian-friendly destination.

4. San Francisco, California

Tying for the most salad shops per capita and ranking second nationwide for the most farmers markets and CSA programs per capita, San Francisco ranks fourth-best for vegans and vegetarians overall. The Bay Area metropolis also ranks tops for diversity, accessibility and quality, which considers important factors such as the share of restaurants serving vegan and vegetarian options as well as vegetable nurseries and community gardens per capita, among other factors.

5. Boise, Idaho

Like Austin, Boise is an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts and vegans and vegetarians alike, ranking 26th or better in all three of the categories that WalletHub examined, including 14th for diversity, accessibility and quality.

6. Austin, Texas

One of the world’s trendiest cities at the moment and famous for its live music and BBQ, Austin also knows how to entertain its vegan and vegetarian visitors. Among cities in the top 20 of WalletHub’s study, only Fort Wayne tops the Texas capital when it comes to affordability (11th), meaning veggie-loving visitors can stretch their dollar further.

7. Seattle, Washington

In the Pacific Northwest, Seattle ranks in the top five for diversity, accessibility and quality but is held back by cost as it ranks 90th among the 100 cities that WalletHub analyzed for affordability. For first time visitors to the Emerald City, Pike Place Market is an excellent place to begin their meatless foodie adventure.

8. Lexington, Kentucky

A surprise entry in the top 10, for sure, Lexington-Fayette ranks eighth overall, including fourth for vegetarian lifestyle. The Horse Capital of the World is propelled to the top of the list by its low cost of groceries for vegetarians, ranking fourth-best behind only Laredo, Texas; Fort Wayne, Indiana and Corpus Christi, Texas.

9. Oakland, California

Oakland trails only nearby Fremont, California in terms of vegetarian lifestyle, ranking second in the all-important category, which takes into account the city’s ranking on Grubhub’s list of cities most likely to order vegetarian or vegan; vegetable and fruit consumption and vegan and vegetarian meetups per capita. Nonetheless, it ranks a dismal 99th for affordability and still trails another popular Bay Area city in the overall rankings.

10. San Diego, California

The top 10 is dominated by cities on the West Coast and San Diego is just one example. America’s Finest City is tied with Miami, Houston, Portland and Las Vegas for the most juice and smoothie bars per capita and ranks ninth nationwide for diversity, accessibility and quality.

11. Tampa, Florida

While Tampa isn’t the top-ranked Florida city in WalletHub’s study, it does rank comfortably inside of the top 10 for diversity, accessibility and quality (eighth), including third-best nationwide when it comes to the most vegetable nurseries per capita.

12. Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta is tied for the most salad shops per capita, ranking 12th in terms of diversity, accessibility and quality. That position is reflected by its overall ranking of 12th in the U.S. in regards to vegan- and vegetarian-friendliness. The ATL has some significant competition in the Southeast, however.

13. Miami, Florida

Miami has never been a city to put health on the backburner so it comes as little shock that it ranks 13th in the United States in terms of vegan- and vegetarian-friendliness. The Magic City ranks fourth for diversity, accessibility and quality. No city in America boasts more farmers markets and CSA programs, juice and smoothie bars, salad shops or vegetable nurseries per capita than Miami.

14. New York, New York

The Big Apple ranks sixth-best in the U.S. when it comes to the diversity, accessibility and quality of its vegan and vegetarian offerings but affordability (74th) and vegetarian lifestyle (37th) prevent it from reaching the top 10 in 2021. Still, New York ranks third for the highest percentage of restaurants serving vegetarian options and the most farmers markets and CSA programs per capita and is tied for the highest percentage of restaurants serving vegan options.

15. Madison, Wisconsin

Perhaps surprisingly, the Wisconsin capital of Madison is the most vegan- and vegetarian-friendly destination in the Midwest, ranking 17th for both vegetarian lifestyle and diversity, accessibility and quality. Stellar restaurants like the Green Owl Cafe and Ian’s Pizza offer visitors plenty of mouthwatering meals to fit their meatless diet.

16. Washington, DC

Like many major cities, the nation’s capital is held back only by affordability, where it ranks 94th among the 100 cities that WalletHub looked at. Ultimately, Washington, D.C. ranks inside the top 10 for both diversity, accessibility and quality (seventh) and vegetarian lifestyle (10th), offering visitors the highest percentage of restaurants serving vegan options and the fourth highest percentage of restaurants serving vegetarian options.

17. Bakersfield, California

One of five California cities to make the top 20, Bakersfield failed to earn a final ranking for vegetarian lifestyle but certainly isn’t without an abundance of awesome options whether you’re in the mood for Mexican, Indian, Greek or whatever else. The Hens Roost and Vida Vegan Co should be high on both vegan and vegetarian visitors’ itineraries.

18. Chicago, Illinois

From The Chicago Diner to True Food Kitchen, the Windy City offers travelers a plethora of exciting vegan and vegetarian options to choose from. Chicago ranks 18th in the U.S. for affordability and 19th for diversity, accessibility and quality, helping it to an overall ranking of 18th. The latter category considers things like the number of farmers markets and community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs per capita as well as access to fresh vegetarian food, cooking classes and more.

19. Fort Wayne, Indiana

Fort Wayne, Indiana ranks 10th nationwide for affordability, a category that considers the cost of groceries for vegetarians, average meal cost and the availability of affordable, highly-rated restaurants serving vegan and vegetarian options. Only Laredo, Texas boasts a lower cost of groceries for vegetarians than Fort Wayne.

20. Las Vegas, Nevada

The Entertainment Capital of the World is a foodie paradise thanks to the prevalence of celebrity chef-inspired restaurants but vegans and vegetarians will also be right at home in Las Vegas, which ranks 20th in WalletHub’s study. Las Vegas is tied for the most juice and smoothie bars per capita and the highest percentage of restaurants serving vegan options.

@AirGuide Destinations Entertainment Food & Drink Hotels & Resorts Madrid Things To Do

Most indulgent activities near Madrid

Madrid is one of the biggest small towns I know. It has all the benefits of a major cosmopolitan capital with a great diversity of food, nightlife, art, and culture while contained in a central location that’s easily walkable. Most importantly a diversity of people, in Madrid you encounter people from all parts of Spain and the rest of the world. Anyone who has been to Madrid before will understand what I am about to explain, Madrid is geographically gifted (Spain should actually be in the same time zone as London), it has a special quality of light that is crisp and clear in the mornings and has a warm high definition quality that energizes in the evening. The sunsets late and a deep blue twilight rises into the night with a magical fairytale quality, making the transition into dark seem somehow light and effortless. I believe this to be one of the reasons you will find people shopping at ten pm and eating dinner at 11pm. Madrid is all about a lifestyle, getting in the groove of the city, and a higher quality of living. Often overshadowed by Barcelona’s big reputation, Madrid’s identity is constantly evolving and with that, I find Madrid is about quality over quantity. There are many great cultural and culinary things on offer but here I want to highlight some of my favorite indulgent activities to do in Madrid.

A privileged pass to privacy

If you are an art lover you probably like to visit a museum or gallery when you visit a new city. I can not even count the times I have been in a museum, whether in New York, London, Paris, or even in Madrid, where I just wanted to be able to enjoy a painting quietly, just for a few minutes without human obstruction or interruption. Or even get through the museum without having to dodge all the crowds. Virtually every time I make a visit I always wonder what it would be like to enjoy a painting in a museum on my own without a sea of school tours and bustling tourists shuffling about me in front of my favorite works by Hopper or Goya. What a luxury it would be to graze through a museum with just a few close friends for an hour or two. With 2,536,844 visitors to the Prado Museum in Madrid, last year and almost one million at the Thyssen (my favorite in Madrid because of its a chronological collection), any fantasies I had about a visit in solitude were all but dashed, or so I thought.

Prado Museum

It is possible to experience both the Prado and Thyssen on your own or with a group of your favourite people, no public and no crowds! The Prado makes their permanent and temporary collections accessible after hours. You can even have dinner and entertainment catered for after your viewing in their main halls. For a set price you get up to two hours of viewing, your own guide and a run of the museum as you choose. The Prado is a huge museum and so this exclusivity has a price to match. Starting at approximately 4500 Euros (not including catering) you can experience some of the great works of art in peace and tranquillity.

The Thyssen Museum also offers a privileged pass to its permanent collection in the mornings before opening to the public. You can have a whole hour of unobstructed viewing silence for a much more reasonable price of approximately 800 Euros.

Luxury wine tasting and vineyard visit

When you think of Madrid, wine is probably not the first thing that springs to mind. La Rioja is probably the most famous wine region of Spain but it is not too convenient if you do not have much time. Just over a year ago a friend who is a chef introduced me to a local wine that is nothing less than grand. Big and beautiful and surprisingly from Madrid!

Just a 35-minute drive from the center of Madrid you will find one of Spain’s best-kept wine secrets, Valquejigoso Vineyards. This relatively small family-run estate of 59 hectares, is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano y Negral producing two red grand wines, V1 and V2, in some of the most modern facilities in Europe. The landscape from afar looks flat but closer inspection reveals its rolling green valleys covered with grapes and olive trees and at its center, we find the family villa. When I arrive at the villa for my first visit I wondered where was the bodega?” Where do they produce the wine? The director of Valquejigoso explained to me that all of the production takes place underground, under the villa, maintaining the environmental aesthetic of the natural countryside. The underground facility is huge considering the limited production of this exclusive wine. V2 is priced at about 62 euros a bottle with production at 17,000 bottles and V1 at about 420 Euro per bottle at 1500 bottles, and then only released if the owner feels that the wine is good enough!

Luxury wine

On my visit, we toured the vineyard in 4×4 and afterward were invited for a vertical tasting. During our visit the enologist and director, Aurelio pointed out how the land produced grapes of different quality and how grapes from the top of a particular hill would produce wine that was different from the same grapes at the bottom of the hill. We then tried the wine from barrels at different stages of its production, when it was in the barrel a year, three years, and of course taste from the bottle. We even got to try the wine from the very spot we saw during our tour, from the top of the hill, and how it differed from the wine in another barrel that came from grapes at the base of the hill. It was a great example of how truly complex wine-making can be.

Luxury wine vineyard

The estate is not running mass tours and tastings or accepting busload of tourists but you can visit by appointment. A tour of the vineyard and wine production facilities with a vertical tasting are approximately 80 euros per person. And if you really want to get the most out of your visit, a barbecue lunch of grilled venison or beef tenderloin with all the best Spanish delicacies can be arranged for a small group.

Car and driver for a day

Madrid is privileged in its central location, with cities like Toledo, Segovia, Avila, Aranjuez, and el Escorial all in easy reach which makes it great for going on a day trip. Toledo and Segovia are only 28 minutes by high-speed train, but public transport has its limitations, the train is never going to wait for you and you really will not get a unique perspective on such a fixed route. Some of the most beautiful and interesting attractions are all along the way. One of my favorite routes is going north of Madrid to Segovia but first stopping by a small village called La Padraza. In the summer they have a festival of music and lights where the entire village is lit by candlelight with concerts in the main plaza. From there you take a winding road through the countryside west to Segovia where you will get breathtaking views of the city visible only by car. The return to Madrid will take you past a secluded summer palace in San Ildefonso and up the pine forest-covered mountain bringing you to an unrivaled view of Madrid. Along the route there several outstanding restaurants specializing in farm-to-table delights that you can only experience if you go by car.

Driver and car

If you really want to experience a more authentic Spain, on your own terms and see things most tourists do not even know about try hiring a car and driver and get off the beaten path in comfort and style. One of the characteristics of luxury travel is uniqueness, and in this case, getting to see things that most people can not.

Driver and car

Personal shopper

Shopping has never been big on my list of things to do when I travel. I tend to buy things as I need them and focus on other activities like eating. Even at home I only seem to buy as the need arises so personal shoppers were never very high on my list of services that I would use, especially when traveling. That is of course was until I had the opportunity to try one as a result of winning a shopping spree here in Madrid. I discovered it was more about maximizing my time, choice, and enjoyment rather than actually someone picking out a wardrobe for me. My experience with my personal shopper started with a phone call, she ask for my sizes, style preferences, a photograph and we then scheduled a day to meet. My personal shopper did not schedule very much time with me, only about two hours. She knew my budget and that I wanted to see what she could do with just that. She took me to about 5 stores, each had clothing set aside for me in my sizes. It was fantastic, every time we entered a store they were expecting us, made sure everything was ready and even had some refreshments in a couple of them. I walked in, tried what she had set aside, we discussed the choices, what I like (which was most of it to my surprise) and what didn’t work. With that we moved on to the next stores and she would make adjustments to what was already selected. An effortless, seamless experience that I actually enjoyed. Had I gone to each of those stores on my own, it would have taken an entire afternoon and I probably would not have found the items that I liked.

Personal shopper

For the person who doesn’t like to shop it is a fantastic way of getting what you want quickly and making the experience as painless as possible. For the person who loves to shop it allows you to discover the best of the Spanish retail experience and the joy of being helped to find those exclusive boutiques with merchandise, you won’t find anywhere else. With the added bonus that logistics, language and sizing are organised for you. And I have to admit the special attention and champagne along the way is the best!

VIP football

Probably the most common thing that springs to mind when they think of Madrid is football (soccer). Real Madrid is known worldwide and their fans make a pilgrimage to Bernabeu Stadium whenever they are in town. Watching any Real Madrid game is an electrifying experience, you truly appreciate the fan’s love of the game, and for the best way to experience a match is sitting in the VIP sections, center field, right next to the presidential box with access to the hospitality suite. A VIP ticket even includes entry to the Real Madrid Museum at the stadium and access to the cities tour bus. One VIP ticket with hospitality will cost you 435 euros.

The most impressive rooftop bars and restaurants in the UK

The Dorchester Rooftop

One of London’s most venerable hotels has an extra ace up its sleeve this summer, the open-air Dorchester Rooftop. The freshly furnished terrace offers panoramic views across a particularly green and pleasant swathe of the skyline, including Hyde Park and Green Park. Menus will be provided by a series of superstar pop-ups, kicking off with Adriana Cavita, formerly of El Bulli in Spain and Pujol in Mexico City. Her tongue-tingling take on Mexican street food includes suckling pig tacos, king crab tostada and fatty tuna with salsa macha. A huge bone-in rib eye, flavoured with charcoal and fire, is more than enough for two to share, but the highlight is the sharp and fragrant sea bream ceviche with mezcal and lemon leaves. Next on the Dorchester Rooftop’s culinary world tour is a trip to Hollywood, with guest dishes from the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

The Standard Rooftop

The Standard Hotel – which is known for its distinct and loud design – unveiled a brand new rooftop in recent weeks, making it the newest addition to eating and drinking in King’s Cross. It takes inspiration from the hotel’s New York roots as it offers up advantageous views of the St Pancras Clock Tower. Open from Wednesday to Sunday, it promises a relaxed “festival-like” atmosphere and a menu of three bottled cocktails (spicy Tommy’s margarita, elderflower collins and rum punch) supplied by Black Lines cocktails.

Sabine

London’s hospitality scene was in complete hibernation, but has burst back into life since England’s partial reopening on 12 April. Bringing a whole new host of venues to all corners of the city, one of the newest additions to the capital resides atop the Leonardo Royal Hotel. You’ll find Sabine situated on the seventh floor and the weather-ready venue has a retractable roof, ensuring an enjoyable visit, no matter the forecast. It plates up unbeatable views of Sir Christopher Wren’s St Paul’s Cathedral and the menu focuses on seasonal produce.

14 Hills

Pre-pandemic 14 Hills was confined to the great indoors but has since reopened with a brand new 14th floor alfresco terrace that seats up to 50 people. Designed with large trees and tropical interiors, its restaurant has been dubbed “a floating forest in the sky”. Iconic landmarks can be seen from various tables including Tower Bridge, The Shard and Tower of London, and it’s quickly become one of London’s most sought-after rooftops. The British produce on the menu comes with a French twist and it has an impressive cocktail menu with signatures going the extra mile thanks to fat-washed whiskey and pea-infused vodkas.

20 Stories

D&D group is responsible for some of England’s most luxurious and high-end restaurants and 20 Stories is one of its most impressive in the north west. Split between a rooftop terrace, restaurant and cocktail bar, this top floor oasis caters for every kind of occasion, whether it be an anniversary, celebration or a couple of well deserved drinks after work. The menus available are extensive, with a la carte, brunch, light snacks (all using locally sourced ingredients) and all manner of drinks, from classic cocktails to dessert wine.

Sky Garden

Sky Garden is one of London’s greatest treasures, nestled atop the “Walkie Talkie” building on Fenchurch Street. The garden, which is forested with endless varieties of flora and fauna, is one of the highest in Europe, giving anyone who’s brave enough to travel up to level 43,  360 degree vistas of the city. More than one million people visit the venue each year and it’s not hard to understand why. Live DJ sets are scheduled throughout the week and there are a handful of award-winning restaurants, including Darwin Brasserie.

Issho

Issho is a rooftop Japanese restaurant in Leeds offering a contemporary twist on traditional Izakaya dining. Spread across an outdoor terrace, Kori bar and indoor restaurant, the interiors are completely pared back with natural lighting from floor-to-ceiling windows highlighting its minimalistic features. The drinks menu zones in on a specialist selection of premium sake, with the cocktail list inspired by Japanese sites, culture and events.

The Rooftop St James

Trafalgar Square, like every major tourist destination in London, is usually flooded with people. To catch a glimpse of it you need to brave the waves of bodies coming from all directions, but not if you know about The Rooftop St James. This skyward hideaway offers itself up as a safe haven from the bustling streets below, so you can enjoy one of the capital’s busiest areas without rubbing shoulders with strangers, all while you have a drink in hand. Table 13 in The Gallery is by far the best seat in the house and the menu, depending on what season you visit in, rotates to ensure only the best is plated up on the marble-topped tables.

Cloud 23

Manchester is short on rooftop bars and restaurants but for what the city lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality. Located in Deansgate on the 23rd floor of Beetham Tower, Cloud 23 boasts panoramic views stretching as far as the eye can see. Its current food menu takes inspiration from Hawaii with a small but tasty selection of poke bowls and nibbles including handmade gyozas and Katsu strips. The drinks menu is simmered down to classics and signatures, with some non-alcoholic seltzers for those who are tee-total but it’s the champagne collection that will make you sit up and take note.

SushiSamba

The team behind SushiSamba have revealed plans to expand their global empire to Edinburgh, opening a new restaurant in 2022. Not many intricate details have been revealed but like its sister in Bishopsgate, it will have an outdoor terrace. Located on the 38th and 39th floor of Heron Tower, the current SushiSamba in London offers unparalleled 360 degree views of the city and the west terrace is one of the highest dining terraces in Europe. With a menu pulling fierce flavours and cooking techniques from Japan, Brazil and Peru, it’s been one of the UK’s leading rooftops since it opened ten years ago.

Marco Pierre White Restaurant & Grill

Soak up panoramic views of Birmingham’s skyline with a trip to Marco Pierre White Restaurant & Grill. Located in the epicentre of the city on the 25th floor of The Cube, this rooftop restaurant is busy every night of the week. It has a reputation as one of the best steakhouses in the city centre and the team have recently announced a new midweek offer. Every Thursday diners can look forward to steak, chips, piccolo tomatoes with delicious béarnaise sauce and a glass of Jean-Luc Columbo wine or a pint of draught beer for £19.95. www.theweek.co.uk

Host your dream Destination Wedding in style

Destination weddings are back, and couples are determined to make up for lost time and tie the knot with celebrations that will create memories to last a lifetime.

With 30 beach and urban resorts located throughout Mexico and in the Dominican Republic, wedding couples working with La Coleccion Resorts by Fiesta America have several options when it comes to choosing a place to host their dream destination wedding.

“Over the last few months, we have tailored our offerings to accommodate couples according to their unique needs. Last year, there was an increase in elopements and micro-weddings, but now we are seeing the larger groups setting dates for late 2021 and early 2022,” said Ambar Molina, Regional Wedding Manager at La Colección Resorts. “No matter what the size or scope, one thing couples can be sure of is that all the attention will be dedicated to them as we only allow one wedding per day at all our resorts.”

Hosting only one wedding event each day means couples will be the sole star of the show throughout the entire celebration – they don’t have to worry about bumping into other wedding parties, and the resort’s full focus will be on them during their special day.

La Coleccion Resorts by Fiesta Americana can meet any couples’ needs, as the properties are located in several different areas. Those wanting a more upbeat beach destination with plenty to do and see can choose Los Cabos or Cancun. Couples drawn to more of an urban vibe can pick San Miguel de Allende for their special day. A Caribbean wedding equipped with a spacious white-sand beach, crystal clear water and swaying palm trees is also possible in Punta Cana.

The resort company knows each wedding ceremony is unique in its own way, which is why there are a host of wedding offerings to choose from. From small, intimate ceremonies to large, festive celebrations, guests can have exactly what they are looking for.

La Coleccion Resorts offers South Asian weddings, beach weddings, indoor weddings and rooftop weddings – there is a location and theme for everyone. La Coleccion Weddings is even certified by the Equality Institute for LGBT weddings as well as the Association of Bridal Consultants, and the company is open to all faiths and traditions.

Although destination weddings are returning in full swing, not all guests are ready to travel quite yet. For this reason, La Coleccion Weddings offers a virtual menu of services guests can gift the couple with. Even if some guests choose to celebrate from afar, they can send something special such as a bottle of champagne, a room upgrade, a tour or flowers, among other options.

To top off the special day, each wedding package includes a complimentary two-night anniversary certificate for couples to redeem at any of the properties in Mexico or the Dominican Republic.

For more information about booking a wedding at one of these properties, contact a travel advisor, visit www.lacoleccionresorts.com or email weddings@posadas.com. Travel agents can become La Coleccion Experts at TravelAgentAcademy.com in order to better assist clients with booking dream vacations and destination weddings at these properties.

Aloft in Tulum, near Cancun is a destination by itself

Two hours south of Cancun, Tulum is one of the last stops of the string of development that punctuates the Riviera Maya. It’s long been an attraction for a more bohemian crowd than the package tourists bound for the large resorts with their ostentatious entrances further up the coast.

Visitors to Tulum will be familiar with the beachfront street dotted with boutique eco-resorts and trendy beach clubs, and a notable lack of global hospitality brands.

That is, until the Aloft Tulum opened in early 2021.

Situated on the edge of Tulum National Park, just on the edge of the town of Tulum proper, Aloft Tulum takes up an ideal location for exploring both the beach areas and the town itself. The Mayan ruins of Tulum are the area’s top attraction, but there’s plenty else to entertain during a visit to the region.

Aloft Tulum brings the Marriott standard to Tulum, and visitors familiar with the Aloft brand will find all the brand touchpoints, but on a rather grander scale than most Aloft properties stateside.

Re:fuel by Aloft has the typical grab-and-go, and there’s also the brand-standard W XYZ Bar, with a range of mezcal cocktails and plenty of convivial seating (and a pool table!) This property also includes the three-meal W XYZ Restaurant, where breakfasts can be taken indoors or out, with a fine selection of local dishes at breakfast (lunch and dinner openings are forthcoming at the time of this writing).

There’s a family pool just outside, next to the fitness center, but the real gem of the hotel is Attico Rooftop Bar & Lounge, which is situated adjacent the rooftop infinity pool with first-come-first-served pool cabanas. Up top, there’s a selection of tacos and fresh seafood, more cocktails (both mezcal and other varieties), and even a selection of hookahs.

Sweeping views of the national park are also on offer, and the spires of the beach clubs, and even the castillo of the ruins are just visible along the distant coast.

Speaking of beach clubs, the hotel partners with three of them, so guests who manage to tear themselves away from the rooftop pool will find a spot on the beach. During our visit we popped into Mia Beach Club for oceanfront daybeds with a European club vibe and grazed on fresh ceviche and tuna “tacos” with jicama shells.

Guests wanting to explore the beach or the town of Tulum (perhaps to sample tacos filled with cochinita pibil, the Yucatecan specialty of citrus-marinated pork) can borrow bicycles from the hotel for their wanderings—there are plenty of bike paths in town and along the road to the waterfront.

When it’s time to tuck in at the end of the day, it’s nice to have a Marriott standard of accommodation to lean on. The Aloft bed is standard across the brand’s properties, and creature comforts like free signature coffee and walk-in rainfall showers certainly up the plush factor.

But this is no ordinary Aloft. The destination footprint is deep and lasting. The hotel itself is built around an untouched swath of rainforest, rather than being built on top of it. I sat in the lobby one morning watching a little green lizard sunning himself on a bit of decorative cornerstone. There’s also work from local artists on display in the lobby, fitting in with Aloft’s art-forward overall design ethos.

The Takeaway

Really the best of both worlds—the comfortable standards of Marriott with the bohemian spirit of the Tulum’s arty boutique hotels, with more than just a passing homage to the spirit of the local area. Aloft Tulum is a destination unto itself.

The Math

I’ve seen rates as low as $91USD per night; all-inclusive rates are also available.

Instagrammable Moment

The rooftop pool feels almost made for Instagram.

Loyalty

Marriott Bonvoy

Good to Know

The hotel can help arrange airport transportation—traffic snarls are frequent and staff can best advise how early to leave the hotel for a return flight.

The three beach clubs the hotel has an agreement with have different terms. Hotel staff can assist in choosing the right one.

Rooftops with the best views in Madrid

There is a popular phrase in Spanish that says “de Madrid al cielo” meaning “from Madrid to heaven”. It may come as a surprise to those who are not familiar with this splendid city, but one of the best qualities that Madrid has to offer is its sky. Madrid has more hours of daylight than most European cities and its sunsets can be quite spectacular.

To witness and appreciate a fabulous Madrid sunset is a must when you come to visit the city. And what better way to do that than from one of its exquisite rooftops. Take in the view of the Madrid skyline, from up high or not so high, while enjoying a glass of Spanish wine, a delicious cocktail or a tasty gourmet meal.

Here are some recommendations:

Azotea del Círculo de Bellas Artes

Probably the rooftop with the most breathtaking views of Madrid, this incredible rooftop can be found on Calle Alcalá between Gran Via and the Cibeles fountain. Access to the “azotea” is just 4 euros and can be purchased at the reception desk of the building. Get there a bit early to avoid the long lines and you will also want to get there in time for the sunset. Order a drink, lay on a lounge chair, and have a walk around the terrace to appreciate the views from every which side. Its seasonal restaurant, Tartan Roof, opens in the spring and is an excellent choice to enjoy an outdoor gourmet meal. Whatever you choose, it is impossible not to enjoy the views!

Dream destinations: Antarctic camp

White Desert’s ‘Wolf’s Fang’ Antarctic camp

Antarctica luxury travel company White Desert has announced details of its second camp, “Wolf’s Fang”, which launches in November. Situated amongst pillars of rock rising 1,000m vertically from the icecap, the camp derives its name from an iconic mountain peak that dominates the skyline. Visible from more than 100km away on cloudless days, Wolf’s Fang mountain was first seen by a flying expedition funded by the Nazi Government in the late 1930s. Since that day, the area has largely been closed to tourists with only Norwegian scientists and a handful of elite alpinists braving the summits.

White Desert’s latest camp will feature six state-of-the-art sleeping tents that are individually heated and designed for two guests each. Prices for trips staying at Wolf’s Fang start from $45,000 (£32,586) and the first trip departs on 28 November 2021. The Early Emperors (six-day) package starts from $52,000 (£37,645) or the Emperors & South Pole (eight-day) package from $83,000 (£60,087). White Desert also offers a “greatest day” trip for $14,500 (£10,485).

Off-The-Beaten-Path California Wine Regions Worth the Trip

It’s no surprise that California leads the way in the U.S. as the Golden State is the fourth-largest producer of wine in the world. Only Italy, France and Spain exceed its production. Though wine is now produced in all 50 U.S. states, California wines comprise 80 to 90% of the U.S. total.

California wine production has a rich viticulture history since the late 1600s when Spanish Jesuit missionaries cultivated vines native to the Mediterranean region in their established missions to produce sacramental wines for Holy Communion.

Fast forward, and these fruits of the vine continued yielding amazing vintages year after year. This bountiful harvest coupled with talented winemakers made California very competitive in world wine competitions. Today, we rival the best of the best winemaking regions in the world.

Though Napa and Sonoma are the most well-known of California’s winemaking regions, there are many others producing impressive award-winning wines. These off-the-beaten-path and more under-the-radar locales are some of California’s best-kept secrets. Not just because

of their amazing wines, but also the culture, landscape, food, and fun that accompany them.

Lodi

It’s an area often missed by visitors to Northern California’s more renowned wine regions, but it shouldn’t be. Located 85 miles east of San Francisco Bay and only 35 miles from Sacramento, Lodi is highly regarded as the Zinfandel capital of the world, producing more than 40 percent of California’s premium red grape. It’s also one of the fastest-growing wine regions in the U.S.

This picturesque region produces more wine grapes than any other California appellation, boasting 85-plus wineries sporting over 100 different varietals.

One of our favorite Lodi wineries is Oak Farm Vineyards, a family-owned and operated 70-acre estate. Originally established in 1860, the property in the San Joaquin Valley is one of the state’s most breathtaking pieces of land.

Residing along the banks of the Mokelumne River surrounded by majestic centuries-old oaks, the estate possesses an appealing bucolic character. Its white barns (some of Lodi’s oldest), and splendid white-railed fencing make Oak Farm appear like a pastoral painting.

With beautiful country roads, a historic downtown, quaint bed and breakfasts, and great places to dine, this area is absolutely perfect for an easily reachable yet more remote wine country getaway.

Tri-Valley

Located just 35 miles east of San Francisco, the Tri-Valley (Amador, San Ramon, and Livermore valleys) is one of California’s oldest wine appellations. Anchored by the quaint town of Livermore, the triangled region is a delightful place to enjoy an authentic off-the-beaten-path Northern California breakaway vacation.

With lots of sunshine, stunning scenic views, amazing creative cuisine, and award-winning wineries, Tri-Valley is a California wine destination that both surprised and delighted us during our visit. And we can’t rave enough about its cuisine—authentic, fresh, creative, and tantalizing.

Some of our go-to wineries here include Wente, Retzlaff, and Fenestra. We must also give shout-outs to the buzzing, impressive, and growing craft brew scene here. The charming small towns of Danville, Dublin, Livermore and Pleasanton, each uniquely reflect a slower almost utopian pace of life. To the delight of vintage car enthusiasts, Danville boasts the renowned Blackhawk Museum. Its impressive Spirit of the Old West exhibit showcases the rich history of the Western Frontier with honest renditions of the struggles between its Native Americans and early settlers.

Paso Robles

It’s no wonder that National Geographic proclaimed Paso Robles to be California’s “Next Great Wine Destination.” One visit here, and the reason rings clear as a bell.

Over 200 wineries dot miles of rolling hills in this scenic region just 30-minutes from the picturesque Central Coast. Crowded? No way, as nothing here feels rushed, hurried, or overwhelming.

It’s almost impossible to pick a favorite winery here as the vast majority of those we visited have been nothing less than impressive.

But there are two that always call us back. One is DAOU Vineyards for its panoramic mountaintop views, luscious fare, and elegant fine wines. The other is Alta Colina for its sweeping wine country vistas, top-quality organic wines, and their campsite called The Trailer Pond with refurbished vintage campers lining the shores of a private pond.

Summerwood Inn is the ideal place to stay. This nine-room romantic bed and breakfast farmhouse radiates beauty, peace and warmth, and provides the opportunity to taste Summerwood’s luscious wines.

Paso’s venues also include olive oil farms, true-blue farm-to-table eateries, and Sensorio—the unforgettable outdoor light show experience. Add in its easily walkable downtown that’s reminiscent of small-town America of yesteryear, and you have one of the best destination wine country getaways imaginable.

Santa Barbara

Different from any other wine-growing region in the world, Santa Barbara’s east-west orientation within the coastal mountain ranges provides Santa Inez Valley openings to the Pacific Ocean where the fog and ocean breezes work their magic on its vineyards.

This magnificent region boasts stunning scenery, beautiful Mediterranean weather, and its vintners are masters of Pinot Noir. Production however includes over 60 other varietals grown here.

Promoted as the “American Riviera,” one visit here and it’s apparent why the town and valley have received this well-deserved moniker. Santa Barbara’s harbor is home to the world famous Stearns Wharf. The historic 1786 Mission Santa Barbara is also located in Santa Barbara, along with botanical gardens, art galleries, and museums.

We love strolling the downtown State Street Promenade, a car-free pedestrian walkway with impressive Spanish architecture, fascinating bars, restaurants, and boutique shops. It’s just the ideal coastal wine country destination for a getaway.

Temecula Valley

Mother Nature has truly blessed this delightful Southern California community nestled among the rolling hills and mountains of the Temecula Valley.

Though it was the wine that put Temecula on the map, its fascinating history, majestic landscapes, exquisite cuisine, and friendly locals have lured people back time and again. Its 40-plus wineries range from rustic to nouveau chic, each unique in its own right. But Temecula also offers a myriad of craft breweries to the delight of beer aficionados, along with two enchantingly hidden speakeasies in its historic downtown.

One of our favorite things to do here is to stay and play among the vineyards in one of its beautiful winery inns like Carter Estate and wake up among the vines. We loved hot-air ballooning over the vineyards as strains of Cat Stevens crooning “Morning has broken,” announced the sunrise breaking through the clouds.

For a more up close and personal experience, horseback riding through the vineyards is a fun, relaxing, and educational adventure.

Turkish novelist and playwright Mehmet Murat Ildan once said “Beautiful places are almost alive! When you visit them, you can feel their breaths!”

A trip to any of these lovely California wine country destinations will impress you with its amazing wines while offering that laid-back off-the-beaten-path escape we all covet and need now and again.
